Chan | María José Velásquez Flores | Aniqah Zowmi المؤلف المؤسسي: Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Education for Peace and Sustainable Development (MGIEP) In September 2016, the education sector from the UNESCO headquarters and the UNESCO category 1 research Institute, the UNESCO Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Education for Peace and Sustainable Development(MGIEP) organised the first International Conference on Prevention of Violent Extremism through Education: Taking Action, in New Delhi, India. The usual plethora of reports and guides produced by experts on the subject, roundtables and expert panels were organised.But something different also happened. UNESCO MGIEP brought 50 youth from across the world rigorously selected through six week online discussion on the subject to participate in a first of its kind, “Talking Across Generations on Education (TAGe)” event. This event organised as a plenary session—not a side or lunch event—brought together these youth in a non-hierarchical “flat” dialogue with about 12 senior policymakers on the challenges and opportunities the youth see in preventing violent extremism through education.The conference culminated with the presentation of a “Youth Action Plan” containing three clear tangible action points. One action point was the development of a youth-led guide on Prevention of Violent Extremism through Education. This Guide is the result of that call to action.The Institute circulated a global call to youth who were willing to take up the challenge of producing the Guide. After a rigorous search based on a well-defined set of criteria, two coordinating lead authors were identified. These authors were then tasked to find the remaining authors who they saw fit to contribute to the Guide and this team then reached out to the wider group of youth to solicit their experiences and guidance in producing the Guide. The youth have done their part. They have reached out to more than 2,000 young people from more than 50 countries, collated their ideas and experiences and finally featured more than 150 unique voices into this document.

Empathy, Perspective and Complicity: How Digital Games can Support Peace Education and Conflict Resolution سنة النشر: 2016 المؤلف: Paul Darvasi المؤلف المؤسسي: Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Education for Peace and Sustainable Development (MGIEP) This paper will address how digital games may be uniquely suited to further the work of peace education and conflict resolution. There is a scarcity of research that specifically studies how digital games, as dynamic and interreactive learning tools, can be leveraged to support and enhance the closely related fields of peace education or conflict resolution; however, research in a number relevant sectors will be recruited to better understand the topic and expose gaps for further work. After defining basic terms, the first section will briefly discuss the aims of peace education and interactive conflict resolution and how digital games can assist in facilitating intergroup contact and collaboration. The heart of the paper will examine several serious games for their potential to cultivate perspective-taking and empathy, explore ethical dilemmas, promote intercultural understanding and encourage a sense of complicity, all crucial components in the work of peace education and conflict resolution. The final section will discuss the importance of context and reflection when implementing digital games and consider whether they can produce long-term, sustainable changes to behaviors and attitudes.

Translating globalization theories into educational research : thoughts on recent shifts in Holocaust education Much educational research on globalization aims to prepare students to be successful citizens in a global society. We propose a set of three concepts, drawing on systems theory (Nassehi, Stichweh) and theories of the subject (Butler, Foucault), to think the global which enables educational research to step back from hegemonic discourses and reflect on current practices. Globalization is understood in this approach as referring to: (1) a cognitive shift; (2) expanding relevancy spaces; and (3) new forms of subjectivation. The framework is illustrated with examples from educational policy and learning materials, with an extended look at how globalization is articulated in recent shifts in Holocaust education. The Elusive and Exclusive Global Citizen سنة النشر: 2015 المؤلف: Jill Koyama المؤلف المؤسسي: Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Education for Peace and Sustainable Development (MGIEP) In this paper, the author interrogate the notion of global citizenship, both as an aspiration and an improbable practice, by situating it within contemporary understandings of citizenship and globalization.It is a conceptualization that suffers from the dangers inherent in the term “citizenship” and misconceptions of the terms “global,” and it is rooted in the West’s long engagement in normative undertakings in non-Western countries. The writer refute ideas of the autonomous and agentic global citizen. he encourage a rethinking of global citizenship and global citizenship education (GCE) and offer recommendations for redirecting attention to contemporary global stratifications and issues of human rights to address the issues of social justice and inequality that, due to the problematic definition of global citizenship, are currently inadequately covered in existing GCE curricula. 
Citizenship, Identity, and Education: Examining the Public Purposes of Schools in an Age of Globalization سنة النشر: 2006 المؤلف: Fernando Reimers المؤلف المؤسسي: UNESCO International Bureau of Education (IBE) One of the purposes of educational institutions is to develop citizenship. In the 21st century, citizenship includes global citizenship. Addressing the challenges of globalization will require making citizenship education and the development of global values an explicit objective of efforts to improve quality throughout the world, critically examining theories and evidence about the effectiveness of various approaches to developing citizenship and global citizenship and supporting activities aligned with this public purpose. In this article, the author does not argue for an exclusive effort to focus schools on civic education, but rather for a balanced effort to elevate educational quality making it more relevant to address global challenges and opportunities, of which civic education and global education are components, much neglected at present. The author also does not suggest making civic education the only purpose of the curriculum or making it a priority to the expense of science, math, arts or physical and health education, but he thinks that helping students develop a sense of purpose, situated within broader civic and global purposes, would also facilitate high level engagement with science, mathematical and artistic pursuits.
