Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) | Mixed Migration Centre This report draws on data collected by the Mixed Migration Centre’s 4Mi monitors along the route to map the places where refugees interviewed in 2018 and 2019 most frequently reported deaths, sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV), physical violence, and kidnappings occurred. It illustrates how refugees and migrants using the route face a series of risks including as they cross into eastern Sudan, and when crossing the Sahara Desert, and then again in multiple places in Libya. Similarly, those traveling through West Africa reported multiple incidents of physical violence, SGBV, as well as deaths at various points. Refugees and migrants have reported being subjected to brutal violence, including being burnt with hot oil, melted plastic, or heated metal objects, being electrocuted, tied in stress positions, and experiencing and witnessing repeated sexual violence, often in the context of ransom demands. UNHCR staff and partners continue to witness the severe impact these abuses have had on the mental health of many men, women, and children.  On This Journey No One Cares If You Live or Die, Volume 2: Abuse, Protection and Justice Along Routes Between East and West Africa and Africa's Mediterranean Coast سنة النشر: 2024 المؤلف المؤسسي: International Organization for Migration (IOM) | Mixed Migration Centre | UN. Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) In the complex landscape of migration, this second volume of the report, On This Journey, No One Cares if You Live or Die, emerges as a crucial body of work that sheds light on the stark realities faced by refugees and migrants traversing the perilous Central Mediterranean route all the way from East and Horn of Africa and West Africa to the North African coast of the Mediterranean and across the sea. Jointly published by IOM, MMC and UNHCR, this report delves into the protection risks faced by refugees and migrants during these journeys. It aims to inform increased and concrete routes-based protection responses to reduce the suffering associated with the desperate journeys refugees and migrants undertake, and to serve as a call to action in addressing the root causes of displacement and drivers of irregular migration through positive action on peace, climate change, governance, inequality and social cohesion, as well as the creation of safe migration pathways.  Global Citizenship Concepts in the Curricula of Four Countries سنة النشر: 2017 المؤلف: Natalie Browes المؤلف المؤسسي: UNESCO International Bureau of Education (IBE) | APCEIU This report details the presence of Global Citizenship Education (GCED) concepts in the education systems of four countries: Cambodia, Colombia, Mongolia and Uganda. It highlights the main findings of eight reports: four expert reports, which predominately analyse curriculum content, and four situational analysis reports, which take a broader view and detail some of the country-specific challenges and opportunities with regard to GCED. Findings reveal the presence of GCED concepts across the curricula of the four countries. In addition to cognitive content related to GCED, competency-based content is also found present within the curricula of these countries. However, the majority of this content can only be indirectly linked to GCED, and it is better interpreted as part of the more traditional civics or citizenship education approach. As such, it generally lacks a global perspective and does not engage with all key themes of GCED. Furthermore, this content is often concentrated at the lower and upper secondary levels, instead of being equally distributed across all grade levels. This is particularly true in the case of behaviour-based competencies. Findings also reveal challenges beyond the curriculum. These include lack of teacher training and lack of support to implement GCED, which are concerns expressed by stakeholders in all four countries. A lack of GCED content in textbooks and lack of supplementary materials were also found to be issues. The report concludes with recommendations regarding the effective implementation of GCED within curricula. Among others, the report suggests the transversal integration of GCED - across the curriculum at all grade levels, while at the same time, actors from all levels of the education system, ranging from central government to teachers, should be engaged to ensure the use of complementary learning materials, pedagogies and assessment techniques. Preparing teachers for inclusive education in Latin America (Prospect: quarterly review of comparative education) سنة النشر: 2011 المؤلف: Denise Vaillant المؤلف المؤسسي: UNESCO International Bureau of Education (IBE) This article analyzes the current challenges facing inclusive education in Latin America and explores some possible solutions. The author suggests that teachers play a key role in providing education that is inclusive for all. In Latin America, today, however, inclusive education often does not respond to the needs of children and young people, and teachers often finish their professional training without acquiring the skills they need to work with children and young people living in difficult circumstances. Teachers also need incentives to work in remote or difficult geographical areas, and they benefit from national efforts to improve their status, including awards for innovative work. Much remains to be done, but the training of teachers for a more inclusive education system is gradually being incorporated as part of the educational policy agenda in Latin America. It aims to “ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all”.Given the essential role of curriculum in enabling quality learning and in articulating and supporting education that is relevant to holistic development, our purpose in this paper is to identify what makes a quality curriculum, so as to support curricular innovation in UNESCO Member States to the end of the realization of Sustainable Development Goal Four.In this we are assuming that curriculum, given its essential role in the provision of quality learning for all children and young people, and in articulating and supporting education that is relevant to holistic development, is critical in the realization of SDG 4. It is the curriculum that determines to a large extent whether education is inclusive, thus playing a significant role in ensuring that provision is equitable. It is the curriculum that provides the structure for the provision of quality learning, especially where teachers might be under-qualified and inexperienced, their classrooms under-resourced, and their students lacking the prior frameworks within which to situate their learning. And it is the curriculum that articulates both the competencies necessary for lifelong learning and the competencies needed for holistic development. We thus argue that curriculum lies at the crossroads of these four key aspects of SDG 4: that education should be (1) inclusive and equitable, (2) characterized by quality learning, (3) promoting lifelong learning, and (4) relevant to holistic development. Curriculum, in other words, provides the bridge between education and development – and it is the competencies associated with lifelong learning and aligned with development needs, in the broadest, holistic sense of the term, that span that bridge.
