Education in a Post-COVID World: Towards a Rapid Transformation; Middle East and North Africa; Regional Brief سنة النشر: 2023 المؤلف المؤسسي: United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) On March 11, 2020, the World Health Organization declared COVID-19 a global pandemic, resulting in disruptions to education at an unprecedented scale. In response to the urgent need to recover learning losses, countries worldwide have taken RAPID actions to: Reach every child and keep them in school; Assess learning levels regularly; Prioritize teaching the fundamentals; Increase the efficiency of instruction; and Develop psychosocial health and wellbeing. This brief presents regional findings from the 4th round of the Survey on National Education Responses to COVID-19 School Closures (‘joint survey’), administered between April to July 2022, and the Global Education Recovery Tracker (‘GERT’), administered between May to July 2022. It examines how countries in the region have progressed in recovering and accelerating learning through the five key policy actions in the RAPID framework. These findings are a follow-up to the 1st round of RAPID data collected in March 2022.

Peace education in formal schools of West Africa: an implementation guide سنة النشر: 2012 المؤلف المؤسسي: West Africa Network for Peacebuilding (WANEP) This guide, first and foremost, seeks to bring hope and provide opportunity for practitioners to use tried and tested techniques to develop capacities of young people to build requisite knowledge and skills to become credible and responsible leaders. It provides both a conceptual and practical framework of peace education and confirms the potential benefits of Peace Education, particularly in the formal sector. It has been developed based on the extensive experience of WANEP’s Peace Education programme across West Africa and this experience has been outlined in great detail throughout the manual. The guide lays emphasis on entry points for developing and initiating Peace Education programmes in schools and provides practical tools for engaging various stakeholders and the wide range of potential roles they can play. In terms of the content of a peace education programme, guidelines are provided on developing a comprehensive programme that integrates effectively key concepts such as Gender and Human Rights. Critical issues of sustainability, resource mobilisation and monitoring and evaluation are covered using practical case studies based on the WANEP experience. The concluding chapter is devoted to addressing some Frequently Asked Questions. This laudable initiative and recommend this guide for adoption by West African states and institutions especially the educational sector as a tool for inculcating a culture of peace and nonviolence amongst children.The guide is divided into six chapters.Chapter 1 consists of introduction and the conceptual definition of basic philosophy that influenced the peace education program of WANEP. It also examines the role of peace education on the psycho social behaviour of youths in West Africa.Chapter 2 highlights WANEP’s guiding principles to the development of its peace education in the sub region and also the basic steps it took to implement its program in the seven (7) pilot states.Chapter 3 looks at how to mobilise resources to sustain the peace education program especially within the context of West Africa.Chapter 4 highlights the challenges that WANEP encountered in implementing the program.Chapter 5 emphasises the importance of monitoring and evaluation for impact and success of a peace education program.Chapter 6 deals with frequently asked questions by interested stakeholders.

Il fournit à la fois un cadre conceptuel et pratique de l'éducation de la paix et confirme les avantages potentiels de l'éducation pour la paix, en particulier dans le secteur formel. Il a été développé sur la base de la longue expérience du programme Education à la Paix de WANEP à travers l'Afrique de l'Ouest et cette expérience a été décrite en détail dans le manuel. For them, digital technologies are more than just tools; they are gateways to new horizons. Digital is creating fresh opportunities, opening doors to unconventional careers, and redefining how knowledge is acquired and shared. Young people are using digital to start new businesses, explore new opportunities, learn new knowledge and skills, and to build global connections. However, young people are also cautious about digital – and they recognise risks and issues posed by digital channels, tools, and technologies. ‘How Digital is Transforming the Lives of Young People in SIDS’ explores these opportunities and challenges by hearing from young people – in their own words. Through a bespoke survey chatbot, running on messaging platforms most used by young people living in SIDS, more than 5,000 respondents from over 30 countries discuss how they’re using digital to transform their lives and livelihoods. And the barriers and challenges that they are facing on their digital journeys.

Languages in adult literacy: policies and practices during the 15 years of EFA (2000-2015) سنة النشر: 2015 المؤلف: Clinton Robinson Linguistic diversity characterises many countries with large literacy needs. Meeting these needs will require a multilingual approach based on learning initial literacy in the learner’s mother tongue, with other languages used subsequently. This paper identifies five major challenges in implementing multilingual programmes, and traces the international policy developments over the 15 years of the EFA period. Four case studies – Mexico, Morocco, Papua New Guinea and Senegal – illustrate a range of policies, showing differing approaches and levels of commitment in providing literacy acquisition based on the mother tongue. The paper concludes with six policy orientations to guide action as part of the post- 2015 agenda.

At the Higher Education (HE) level, some progress has been made, but the institutions are lagging behind in having gender parity, more so in top leadership positions. Men dominate leadership positions. At lower education levels, progress is hampered by socio-economic and cultural gender inequities, and limited resources. Socio-cultural practices such as Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and early marriages have also had a negative effect on women’s advancement to HE.There are multiple factors that hinder women’s participation in HE and in reaching leadership positions. These include fewer women having PhD, maternal household engagement, limited time for participation in research and related activities that are a requirement for upward mobility as well as lack of child care and women-friendly facilities within universities. Ongoing mainstreaming of gender in HE is improving the situation, albeit minimal. More effort is needed to increase the number of women in HE. In addition, there is limited administrative commitment on the part of the universities to address gender inequality in leadership positions.Overall, HE institutions have not fully exploited opportunities that exist for gender advancement in HE, including potential partnerships for supporting the advancement of women. There is need for effective governance to achieve gender equality and collaboration between HE institutions, and development partners through public-private partnerships. Such partnerships have the potential for making resources available and for funding opportunities to enhance the support to women students, in particular those undertaking STEM courses which require more time for study.In Kenya, higher education has evolved over time from the technical and commercial institute in Nairobi – the Royal Technical College of East Africa – established in 1951 to offer technical courses within the East Africa region. The college was transformed to Royal Technical College in 1961, and later to the University of Nairobi in 1970. From this initial one university, Kenya currently has 32 chartered public universities, 9 public university constituent colleges, 21 chartered private universities and 3 private university constituent colleges.In South Sudan, at its commencement, missionary education did not provide for girls. When schools re-opened in August 1956, the Sudanese government authorities maintained the closure of the girls’ schools, irrespective of whether government or missionary, for the following four to five years. The impact has been the severe retardation of girls’ education for almost a generation. Tradition and tribal customs regarding gender equity are still very strong and dominant in everyday life. Consequently, traditional male stereotypes also dominate within almost all higher education institutions, including the Ministry of Higher Education (MoHEST) itself. This research is in fact the first time an effort is being made to investigate the participation of women in HE and in leadership positions in universities and other tertiary institutions. This explains the very limited response to the questions sent out to the institutions outside Juba. Today, however, a good start has been made in advancing girls’ education in general.In Uganda, under similar circumstances, women do not have good access to higher level jobs, positions, voice and wealth like men. The low representation of women in leadership positions in higher education institutions in the country can be traced back to the late start in women’s enrollment in modern schooling due to a number of factors.
