Global Report on Early Childhood Care and Education: The Right to a Strong Foundation Year of publication: 2024 Corporate author: UNESCO | United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) Inclusive and quality early childhood care and education (ECCE) are vital for promoting school readiness, foundational learning, and lifelong well-being. Yet almost 60% of children in low-income countries do not have access to early care and learning opportunities. To meet national targets of providing at least one year of organized learning before primary school, low-income and lower-middle-income countries must fill an annual financial gap of USD 21 billion and recruit at least six million more educators before 2030. The first global report, jointly published by UNESCO and UNICEF, offers insights into global and regional ECCE trends. The report, which is a key response to the commitments outlined in the Tashkent Declaration, synthesizes scientific evidence on ECCE’s importance, and exposes persistence gaps in policy and investment. It illustrates how countries have responded to providing equitable and quality ECCE opportunities. The report invites all stakeholders, from governments and policy-makers, to educators, parents and organizations, to ensure that the commitments made in the Tashkent Declaration are fully realized by building a strong foundation for every child.

Supporting Child Nutrition and Sustainable Development through International Collaboration Year of publication: 2023 Author: Wang Luo | Chen Xiaoning | Huang Yangmu Corporate author: Chinese Academy of International Trade and Economic Cooperation(CAID) | United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) Child health and nutrition are key goals under the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda. Currently, around 45% of deaths among children under five years of age are linked to undernutrition. These mostly occur in low- and middle-income countries. In June 2023, the Chinese Academy of International Trade and Economic Cooperation (CAITEC) and the UNICEF China Office convened a forum on “Supporting Child Nutrition and Sustainable Development Through International Co-operation”. Participating experts discussed China’s experience, and the potential presented, and challenges faced by Chinese product, in boosting the improvement of child nutrition in impoverished regions of Africa and Asia. The case study is a summary of the views presented at the forum. The State of the World’s Children 2023 Executive Summary Year of publication: 2023 Corporate author: United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) The world is facing a red alert for children’s health: Vaccination coverage dropped sharply during the COVID-19 pandemic, leaving millions more children unprotected against some of childhood's most serious diseases. In addition, many millions of children from some of the world's most marginalized communities have long missed out on life-saving vaccination. Catch-up and recovery are needed urgently to vaccinate the children missed and to avoid further backsliding. And greater effort is needed to reach the children historically left behind.The State of the World’s Children 2023 examines what needs to happen to ensure that every child, everywhere is protected against vaccine-preventable diseases. In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, which set back progress in childhood immunization globally, it focuses on the role of poverty, marginalization and gender in determining whether or not children are vaccinated. Drawing on lessons learned during the pandemic and from UNICEF's decades-long expertise and experience in vaccinating children, the report examines the ways in which primary health care can be strengthened to better support immunization services. It looks, too, at concerns around trust in vaccines. International Technical Guidance on Sexuality Education: An Evidence-Informed Approach Year of publication: 2018 Corporate author: Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) | United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) | United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) | United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women) | World Health Organization (WHO) The UN International technical guidance on sexuality education was first published in 2009 as an evidence-informed approach for schools, teachers and health educators.Recognizing the dynamic shifts in the field of sexuality education that have occurred since then, an expanded group of UN co-publishing partners has reviewed and updated the content to respond appropriately to the contemporary needs of young learners, and to provide support for education systems and practitioners seeking to address those needs. The International technical guidance on sexuality education (revised edition) provides sound technical advice on the characteristics of effective comprehensive sexuality education (CSE) programmes; a recommended set of topics and learning objectives that should be covered in comprehensive sexuality education; and, recommendations for planning, delivering and monitoring effective CSE programmes. This revised edition of the Guidance reaffirms the position of sexuality education within a framework of human rights and gender equality, and promotes structured learning about sex and relationships in a manner that is positive, affirming, and centred on the best interests of the young person. It is based on a review of the latest evidence and lessons-learned from implementing CSE programmes across the globe. The revised Guidance reflects the contribution of sexuality education to the realization of multiple Sustainable Development Goals, notably Goal 3 on good health and well-being for all, Goal 4 on quality education for all, and Goal 5 to achieve gender equality.

To prepare them for life, work, citizenship and life-long learning, UNICEF encourages governments and partners to expand access to learning and skills development for all children and adolescents – from pre-primary to upper-secondary age, and particularly for the most marginalized.
