Global citizenship education and its implications for curriculum goals at the age of globalization Year of publication: 2010 Author: Shahla Zahabioun | Alireza Yousefy | Mohammad H Yarmohammadian | Narges Keshtiaray Corporate author: Canadian Center of Science and Education Comme le processus inévitable du 21e siècle, la mondialisation a affecté et changé tous les aspects de la vie humaine, y compris l'éducation. Ecopedagogy and citizenship in the age of globalisation: connections between environmental and global citizenship education to save the planet Year of publication: 2015 Author: Greg William Misiaszek Corporate author: Wiley‑Blackwell Teaching the connections between environmentally-harmful acts and social conflict is essential but is often ignored in education. This article presents two ways in which these are not taught because of the policies of those who benefit from the ignorance of these connections: first, the avoidance of teaching global-local connectivity and second, the devaluing of non-dominant cultures. Ecopedagogy is a democratic, transformative pedagogy centred on increasing justice by critically teaching the politics of environmental issues. I argue that global citizenship education (GCE) must be an element of ecopedagogy to contextually learn globalisation's effects upon local communities. In addition, GCE's goal is to increase students' understanding of diverse cultures to respect them. Ecopedagogy is also essential to GCE to fully teach social conflicts resulting from environmentally harmful acts. I offer policy and pedagogical changes to disrupt reproductive environmental pedagogies that help to sustain environmental ills for ecopedagogy-GCE models to emerge. Video sketch: Global Youth Advocacy Workshop on GCED Year of publication: 2015 Corporate author: APCEIU APCEIU produced a video on the Global Youth Advocacy Workshop on GCED held in Busan, Republic of Korea, from 30 March to 4 April 2015. The workshop invited 45 youth participants from 34 countries around the world, who are actively engaged with and committed to advocating and educating youth for GCED in their local contexts. This short video sketch of the workshop provides an overview of the activities carried out during the workshop and also includes the interviews of the participants, who shared their expectations, impressions, and reflections on the workshop. The workshop was co-organized by APCEIU, UN Secretary General’s Global Education First Initiative (GEFI), and the UNESCO Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Education for Peace and Sustainable Development (MGIEP); and sponsored by Educate A Child and the Geum-jeong District of Busan Metropolitan City. Global citizenship education: citizenship education for globalizing societies Year of publication: 2015 Author: Werner Wintersteiner | Heidi Grobbauer | Gertraud Diendorfer | Susanne Reitmair-Juárez Corporate author: Austrian Commission for UNESCO This text reflects the work we have been doing for many years in the area of Global Citizenship Education (GCED) in Austria. Two endeavors particularly stand out: first, the continuing Masters programme GCED at the Alps-Adriatic University (Alpen-Adria Universität) in Klagenfurt, which is a specialized course of study for educationalists, teacher trainers, NGO associates and teachers (participants may either graduate with a certificate after two years or an MA degree after three years respectively), and second, our cooperation with the Austrian UNESCO Associated Schools Project Network. This was the originally intended audience for the German version of this brochure, which constitutes the programmatic basis for our training programs. We understand GCED as a concept that is located at the interface between civic education, global education and peace education, as well as education for sustainable development and intercultural learning. Our approach is characterized by these four features:* theoretical grounding and a particular focus on terminology in order to foster competence of judgment regarding political concepts* investigating the historical dimension of GCED in depth in order to account for colonialism and neocolonialism* socio-critical orientation in order to set us apart from strands of GCED that ultimately perpetuate concepts of Western hegemony* didactic implementation that is systematic and based on appropriate theoretical work in order to avoid pragmatismWith this English edition (the section specific to the Austrian context was omitted) we wish to initiate a dialog with colleagues in the whole world and hope to engage in lively exchange. Imagining a Post-COVID-19 Global Citizenship Education Year of publication: 2020 Author: Marta Estelles | Gustavo E. Fischman Corporate author: State University of Ponta Grossa The COVID-19 pandemic has created unprecedented conditions in all areas of social life and as the suspension of schooling became “the new normal,” numerous experts and opinion-makers rushed to voice their recommendations to overnments and educational organizations for normalizing schooling operations. In light of this worldwide crisis, we re-evaluate proposals to expand the model of Global Citizenship Education (GCE) that have received increasing attention and support from both international organizations, governments, and scholars. In this article, we argue that the predominately redemptive nature of GCE models and proposals since the mid-1990s cannot handle global problems associated with the current pandemic such as the restriction of citizen’s privacy rights or the strengthening of exclusionary nationalistic messaging. Instead, more realistic models of GCE are needed. This paper concludes with new questions to strengthen the debate and alternatives for imagining a non-redemptive and more realistic GCE. Éducation des adultes et développement: l’éducation à la citoyenneté mondiale (no 82, 2015) Year of publication: 2015 Corporate author: DVV International Issue 82/2015 of the international journal Adult Education and Development (AED) explores the topic global citizenship education. In the international debates, we are witnessing a growing interest in the concept of global citizenship education. It is one of the three pillars of the Global Education First Initiative (GEFI) launched by the United Nations Secretary-General in 2012 and is being internationally promoted by the work of UNESCO. According to the GEFI, education that fosters global citizenship “must fully assume its central role in helping people to forge more just, peaceful, tolerant and inclusive societies”. The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in September 2015, refers to global citizenship as one tool to “ensure that all learners acquire the knowledge and skills needed to promote sustainable development”. The ambitions are high, but the concrete understanding of global citizenship education and its implications differ widely. Is it just another abstract concept? What meaning can the word citizenship have if it does not refer to a specific nation? What do people in different parts of the world understand by global citizenship? And how can global citizenship education be put into practice? Adult Education and Development decided to engage in the debate and invited authors from different regions, backgrounds and disciplines to share their thoughts and experiences on the topic and related questions such as identity, migration, peace, the meaning of citizenship, globalisation and sustainable development. Irina Bokova, Director-General of UNESCO, explains the organisation’s understanding of global citizenship education, and why adult education and “learning beyond the classrooms” are crucial when it comes to promoting global citizenship. Canadian author and journalist Doug Saunders (“Arrival City: How the Largest Migration in History Is Reshaping Our World”) talks about the challenges and opportunities of what he refers to as the last great human migration, that from the countryside to the cities, and about the positive role adult education can play during this transition. In the section “Citizens’ voices” people from all over the world talk about what global citizenship means to them and in what ways they see themselves as global citizens. And photographer Viktor Hilitksi travelled through Belarus and captured with his camera how villages rediscover their local traditions and cultures. Evaluating the Impact of Global Citizenship Education on Young People’s Attitudes Towards Equality, Diversity and Tolerance Year of publication: 2019 Author: Oakleigh Welply | Abderrahim Taamouti | Gabriel Bracons Font Corporate author: WISE | Durham University This research aims to address questions around the implementation, measurement, and success of Global Citizenship Education (GCE) as a response to the global challenges of the twenty-first century. GCE aims to foster peaceful, inclusive, tolerant, sustainable, and socially just societies; yet despite its centrality in international policy discourse and academic research, the impact of GCE on young people’s attitudes towards inequalities in society or human rights remains relatively unexplored.
