Conceptualizing Intercultural Understanding within International Contexts: Challenges and Possibilities for Education Year of publication: 2017 Author: Fethi Mansouri, Ruth Arber Corporate author: UNESCO This chapter interrogates the ways in which intercultural conception has been defined in diverse contexts, providing the framing context for policy and curriculum measures to work with the manifestations of global population movement, diversity and change. It asks questions the ways in which conversations about intercultural understanding can be broadened to consider how entrenched systemic inequalities, the underlying notional and institutional frameworks that support them, and the mono-cultural and specific privileges and oppression, which are so often their enduring outcome, can be dismantled. To that end, it examines how policy and notional and practical work, in relation to intercultural understanding, can better encompass structural and cultural change regarding the ways in which cross cultural encounters and intercultural relations are shaped and take place.

The first has to do with the relevance or impertinence of a program to record the narratives of our original peoples about the origins and trajectories of humanity. In relation to this first point, they are interested in proposing the bases for an emancipatory approach, that is, counter-hegemonic, of the original narratives. The second question asks about the consequences that it has, for the self-understanding of the crises and tensions of current societies, to highlight non-Western conceptions of human origins and trajectories. La segunda cuestión se interroga por las consecuencias que tiene, para la autocomprensión de las crisis y tensiones de las sociedades actuales, poner en evidencia concepciones no occidentales de los orígenes y las trayectorias humanas.

The significant contribution of the aforementioned experiences lies in the recognition and appreciation of the ethnic and cultural diversity of its students and communities, as a starting point for the development of new learning and affirmation of their identity. In turn, life in educational centers promotes intercultural relations of respect and fraternity in a local and subregional sociogeographic context, characterized by multiculturalism.
