World Report on the Culture of Peace: Civil Society Report at Midpoint of the Culture of Peace Decade Year of publication: 2005 Corporate author: Foundation for a Culture of Peace The year 2005 marks the midpoint of the International Decade for a Culture of Peace and Non-Violence for the Children of the World (2001-2010) as proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly.The present report has been submitted to the UN Secretary-General for the General Assembly's consideration at its next session under the relevant agenda item which will review the midpoint of the Culture of Peace Decade. This initiative responds to the invitation contained in operative paragraph 10 of General Assembly resolution A/59/143.The report is based on the accounts submitted by 700 organizations from all regions of the world. From the information received, it can be concluded that the culture of peace is advancing.The report provides the first comprehensive view of the progress made by the global movement for a culture of peace, since it was called for in 1999 by General Assembly resolution A/53/243 (annexed to the end of this report). 
Education, Identity and Rising Extremism: From Preventing Violent Extremism to Promoting Peace, Resilience, Equal Rights and Pluralism (PREP) Year of publication: 2017 Author: Sanam Anderlini Corporate author: International Civil Society Action Network In November 2016, during ICAN’s fifth annual Women, Peace and Security forum, members of the Women’s Alliance for Security Leadership (WASL) and other women-led organizations in over 30 countries analyzed the role of formal and informal education in contributing to enabling conditions and mitigating extremist violence. They also highlighted their own practical experiences and lessons learnt in providing education to prevent violent extremism by fostering peace, resilience, equal rights and pluralism (PREP) in formal and informal spaces, including through the teachings of alternative religious narratives. Their experiences, combined with desk research on the state of current policy and practice, and the first multi-stakeholder Global Solutions Exchange (GSX) meeting on the nexus of education, gender and extremism held at the UNESCO headquarters in Paris in March 2017, inform the findings of this report.

Education for peace and sustainable development: concepts, clarity and cohesion Year of publication: 2013 Corporate author: Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Education for Peace and Sustainable Development (MGIEP) UNESCO MGIEP's focus lies in exploring and engaging with the strong interlinkages between peace and sustainable development and making interventions in the education systems to impart these principles. The first publication from the Institute Education for Peace and Sustainable Development: Concepts, Clarity and Cohesion explores the interlinkages and interdependencies of Education for Peace and Education for Sustainable Development. The monograph contains four concept papers which elaborate on the interlinkages between education, peace and sustainable development, define the gaps in the current approach to education for peace and sustainable development and argue for a comprehensive approach to issues of peace and sustainability to be incorporated in education systems. UNESCO MGIEP aims to develop a theoretical framework to look at the interlinkages between peace and sustainability in a holistic manner and this monograph is the first exercise towards building this discourse.

Rethinking Schooling for the 21st Century: The State of Education for Peace, Sustainable Development and Global Citizenship in Asia Year of publication: 2017 Corporate author: Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Education for Peace and Sustainable Development (MGIEP) Calls to gear up schools for the 21st century are ubiquitous today. Dominant international educational discourse hails the potential of 'the youth dividend' and digital technology for enhancing growth. Some Asian education systems are held up as models for an innovation-led utopian future. But across much of Asia, neither the reality of schooling nor the patterns of development with which it is associated give cause for blithe optimism.This study is informed by UNESCO’s commitment to realising the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through educational reform worldwide. Since its inception, UNESCO has championed a humanistic vision of education — a vision today encapsulated in SDG 4.7. These ideals need to be strongly restated and defended in an era when educational debate worldwide has come to be framed by a narrowly economistic and instrumentalist agenda.Deriving urgent significance from this broader context, the present report analyses how far the ideals of SDG 4.7 – of 'education for peace, sustainable development and global citizenship' - are embodied in policies and curricula across 22 Asian societies. At one level, it seeks to develop benchmarks against which future progress can be assessed. It also argues forcefully that conceptions of the fundamental purposes of schooling need to be reconfigured, if the ideals to which the global community has subscribed are actually to be realised.
