Inclusion Beyond Borders: What Is Needed to Recognize, Validate and Accredit the Prior Learning of Migrants and Refugees? (Lifelong Learning Policy Brief; 15) Year of publication: 2024 Corporate author: UIS This policy brief provides insights regarding four principal areas of action for policy-makers and other key stakeholders who seek to build the recognition, validation and accreditation (RVA) systems that cater to the needs of migrants and refugees as distinct groups. It highlights the importance of developing an integrated national policy approach that supports sustainable implementation of RVA practices inclusive of newcomers from different walks of life. It also looks at establishing a clear, shared vision for a comprehensive RVA system that is inclusive of both migrants and refugees, reflected in key building blocks. It explores the creation of quality processes to assess the skills, competencies and potential of individuals from diverse backgrounds accurately and professionally, through flexible, accessible practices. Finally, it evaluates how RVA outreach and counselling mechanisms that cater to both migrants and refugees can be incorporated. 
Educational Route: Lessons Learned Year of publication: 2024 Corporate author: Save the Children This report, prepared by Save the Children in partnership with HIAS and funded by ECHO, sets out the main lessons learned from the Educational Route project, which has had areas of intervention in Mexico, Panama, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador. The objective of the project has been to contribute to reducing barriers to access to education for children, adolescents and families on the move along the Central American migratory routes. Within the framework of the project, a methodological package has been created containing an evaluation tool “HALDO on the move” (Holistic Assessment of Learning and Development Outcomes) that allows different humanitarian actors to quickly assess the educational level of children and adolescents and record their data on a platform in order to offer an emergency education response adapted to real learning needs, as well as achieve greater coordination to promote educational continuity along the route. 
Reporting on Migrants and Refugees: Handbook for Journalism Educators Year of publication: 2023 Corporate author: UNESCO Covering migration: A challenge for journalism educators worldwide This handbook enables journalism educators worldwide to address one of the challenges of the 21st century – migration and refugee matters. In a set of thirteen modules, journalism educators are provided with a comprehensive curriculum. It covers all aspects needed to train analysis, research, presentation, marketing, and ethics of migration coverage.The handbook is unique as it comprises results of communication studies as well as political and social sciences. It has been developed by an international and cross-cultural group of media researchers, media educators and media practitioners.Journalism educators will be enabled to jump-start a new curriculum. Journalism students will learn that matters of migration and forced displacement are concerned about human beings and therefore require knowledge and awareness of accurate facts, reliable sources, ethical reporting and good practices. Experienced journalists will benefit from using the volume as a self-learning tool, and media development organizations may adapt the curriculum to their training plans.The project will impact a more comprehensive coverage of migrant and refugee matters in countries of origin, transit and destination, and a more balanced and informed public debate across countries and cultures.

Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) In the complex landscape of migration, this second volume of the report, On This Journey, No One Cares if You Live or Die, emerges as a crucial body of work that sheds light on the stark realities faced by refugees and migrants traversing the perilous Central Mediterranean route all the way from East and Horn of Africa and West Africa to the North African coast of the Mediterranean and across the sea. Jointly published by IOM, MMC and UNHCR, this report delves into the protection risks faced by refugees and migrants during these journeys. It aims to inform increased and concrete routes-based protection responses to reduce the suffering associated with the desperate journeys refugees and migrants undertake, and to serve as a call to action in addressing the root causes of displacement and drivers of irregular migration through positive action on peace, climate change, governance, inequality and social cohesion, as well as the creation of safe migration pathways.

The Global Humanitarian Overview (GHO) is the world’s most comprehensive, authoritative and evidence-based assessment of humanitarian need. Through plans that prioritize those most in need, it aims to fight hunger, killer diseases, gender-based violence and displacement. The GHO 2025 presents an analysis of global crises and needs and the humanitarian plans to address them. In 2025, humanitarian partners are appealing for over US$47 billion to assist nearly 190 million people facing life-threatening and urgent needs across 72 countries. The report looks at response trends to strengthen, such as localization, cash, accountability and the changes needed to deliver aid effectively: security and funding. The GHO presents a collective picture of humanitarians' achievements and, conversely, what happens when humanitarians are unable to deliver aid. On This Journey, No One Cares If You Live or Die: Abuse, Protection, and Justice Along Routes Between East and West Africa and Africa’s Mediterranean Coast Year of publication: 2020 Corporate author: UN. Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) | Mixed Migration Centre This report draws on data collected by the Mixed Migration Centre’s 4Mi monitors along the route to map the places where refugees interviewed in 2018 and 2019 most frequently reported deaths, sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV), physical violence, and kidnappings occurred. It illustrates how refugees and migrants using the route face a series of risks including as they cross into eastern Sudan, and when crossing the Sahara Desert, and then again in multiple places in Libya. Similarly, those traveling through West Africa reported multiple incidents of physical violence, SGBV, as well as deaths at various points. Refugees and migrants have reported being subjected to brutal violence, including being burnt with hot oil, melted plastic, or heated metal objects, being electrocuted, tied in stress positions, and experiencing and witnessing repeated sexual violence, often in the context of ransom demands. UNHCR staff and partners continue to witness the severe impact these abuses have had on the mental health of many men, women, and children.
