Improving the quality of teacher education in Sub-Saharan Africa: lessons learned from a UNESCO-China Funds-in-Trust project Year of publication: 2018 Corporate author: UNESCO The booklet describes how the project started, the choice of beneficiary countries, the implementation strategies and its achievements. The different sections numbered one to four describe particular aspects of the project, using country cases to illustrate how the success of the project was due to strong country ownership and leadership. UNESCO, in partnership with the Government of the People’s Republic of China, initiated the project to enhance the institutional capacity and the professional development of teacher educators through ICT-supported learning, teaching and research. This technology aided the transformation of capacity teacher training through digitalization of instructional materials. 
International symposium of the international network for reorienting teacher education towards sustainability, 19-21 May 2010, UNESCO Headquarters, Paris: meeting summary and next steps Year of publication: 2010 Corporate author: UNESCO A symposium for members of the International Network of Teacher Education Institutions was held at UNESCO Headquarters on 19 – 21 May 2010. Approximately 100 participants, who were teacher educators, representatives from ministries of education and UNESCO staff, attended. The participants, coming from 50 countries, met for a combination of professional development related to education for sustainable development and teacher education and to share experiences related to these two topics. The participants also discussed how to create and maintain national or regional networks of teacher education institutions that are working to reorient teacher education to address sustainability. The symposium was organized by the Section for DESD Coordination at UNESCO in collaboration with the UNESCO Chair on Reorienting Teacher Education to Address Sustainability at York University in Canada. Environ 100 participants, qui étaient des formateurs d'enseignants, des représentants des ministères de l'éducation et de personnel de l'UNESCO, ont assisté. Les participants, venant de 50 pays, se sont réunis pour une combinaison de perfectionnement professionnel lié à l'éducation pour le développement et la formation des enseignants durable et de partager des expériences liées à ces deux sujets. Les participants ont également discuté de la façon de créer et de maintenir des réseaux nationaux ou régionaux d'institutions de formation des enseignants qui travaillent à réorienter la formation des enseignants vers le développement durable. Le symposium a été organisé par la section DEDD Coordination à l'UNESCO en collaboration avec la Chaire UNESCO sur la réorientation de la formation des enseignants vers le développement durable à l'Université de York au Canada. 
Integrating education for sustainable development (ESD) in teacher education in South-East Asia: a guide for teacher educators Year of publication: 2018 Corporate author: UNESCO Bangkok This publication is a cumulative output of the project Sustainability Begins with Teachers in South-East Asia, implemented by UNESCO Bangkok, in cooperation with SEAMEO from 2017 to 2018, with the generous support of the Government of Japan. The initial content was developed together with the representatives of the universities and teacher education institutions who participated in the South-East Asia Sub-Regional Workshop on Education for Sustainable Development for Teacher Education Institutions, held from 5 to 9 June 2017 in Chiang Rai, Thailand. Content has since been enhanced through the sharing of knowledge and experiences gathered from a series of in-country workshops held in Cebu, Philippines; Luang Prabang, Lao PDR; Kampot, Cambodia; Bangkok, Thailand; and Yogyakarta, Indonesia. This culminated in a project review workshop in Bangkok from 24 to 26 April 2018 in which different in-country experiences were shared and comments on the guidebook collected. Twenty-six universities and teacher education institutions have taken part in the project process in total. This guidebook is a result of this collaborative journey. Integrating education for sustainable development & education for international understanding: conceptual issues and pedagogical principles for teacher education to address sustainability Year of publication: 2006 Author: Swee-Hin Toh Corporate author: UNESCO Bangkok It is in this spirit that this essay seeks to “integrate” two active and expanding fields of 2 educational innovation and transformation worldwide, namely ESD (education for sustainable development or sustainability) and EIU (education for international understanding). The key conceptual issues and themes of both of these movements will be clarified and shared values and understandings highlighted. It will also be argued that both ESD and EIU , in order to effectively fulfill their goals of building a peaceful, just and sustainable world order, rests on some key common pedagogical principles and processes. Another introductory caveat is also essential here, namely the question of paradigm. Among policy-makers, theorists and practitioners, there may well be and often are distinct differences in conceptualization according to their paradigmatic interpretations, with consequently alternative implications for policies and practices.
