Sustainable Development in the State of Qatar: Achievements and Challenges Year of publication: 2008 Author: Nuzad Alhiti | Mohammed Almahindi Corporate author: Standing Committee for Housing This book deals with the theoretical frameworks of sustainable development and its applications in the State of Qatar. It has been divided into four chapters. The first chapter deals with a statement of the concept of sustainable development, its dimensions and the development it has witnessed, as well as clarification of the indicators of sustainable social, economic, environmental and institutional development. The second chapter reviews the institutional and legislative developments for sustainable development in the State of Qatar, and the most important initiatives undertaken by the state to achieve sustainable development, in addition to a statement of the most important strategies and policies developed by the state in the social, economic, environmental and institutional fields of sustainable development. As for the third chapter, it deals with the analysis of the most important indicators of sustainable social, economic, environmental and institutional development, and its strengths and weaknesses, while the fourth and final chapter reviews the most important challenges facing sustainable development in the State of Qatar. The Right to Education: What’s at Stake in Afghanistan?; A 20-Year Review Year of publication: 2021 Corporate author: UNESCO This report takes stock of the achievements in education made by Afghanistan over the past 20 years and sets out immediate action to safeguard the right to education for all learners following deep political change in the country in 2021.Although Afghanistan lags far behind countries across South and West Asia on most development indicators, it has made impressive progress in education over two decades. Enrolment has increased ten-fold, with substantial gains for girls and female literacy. Female teachers have been hired. Steady efforts have been made to expand the school network across the country.The country has ratified key international normative instruments relating to the right to education; enshrined this right in the Constitution and adopted a wide range of policy measures to increase access, improve education quality and reduce gender, socio- economic and rural/urban disparities.But the challenges remain colossal, with half the primary school-aged children not enrolled in school and very low learning outcomes. The country is highly dependent on external aid to sustain its education system. It needs to uphold state obligations on the right to education without any discrimination and continue removing barriers that impede progress towards the Sustainable Development Goal on education to build the country’s future.  Recommendations of the Conference on "Education for Social Cohesion in Lebanon" Year of publication: 2009 Corporate author: American University of Beirut The file is a summary of the recommendations that came out of the "Education and Social Cohesion in Lebanon" conference, which was held at the American University in Beirut. The recommendations deal with the challenges of social cohesion in Lebanon with its different sects and ethnic components. This conference lasted for three days and was attended by a group of participants from Lebanon and abroad.  Impact Report-Earthquake-Haiti 2021 Year of publication: 2022 Corporate author: Centre for International Cooperation and Study (CECI) On August 14, 2021, a magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck the Great South of Haiti with full force, causing nearly of 2,300 dead and considerable material damage. This new natural disaster has come to worsen an already difficult socio-economic situation for families in this region of Haiti, which was barely within the devastating aftermath caused by Hurricane Matthew in 2016. From the first hours following the earthquake, CECI-Haiti, which was already carrying out 6 development in the departments of Grand-Anse and Sud, mobilized its teams to support government authorities, assess the needs of the population, in particular those of families and women, take stock of the damage and establish an action plan for recovery. The cities the most affected in the eastern region of the Grand'Anse department were the municipalities of Camp-Perrin, Roseaux, Coral, Beaumont, and Pestel.For the first emergency, the following priorities had been identified:  Need for water supply;  Need for drugs and agricultural inputs;  Need for food and milk for the children;  Need for tents and tarpaulins for temporary shelters;  Need for sanitary products and clothing, portable toilets, etc.;  Need for psychosocial support;To provide a rapid and significant response to urgent needs, CECI received funds from the public Canadian and obtained funding from the Ministry of International Relations and La Francophonie of the Government of Quebec.   Higher Education, Peace & Security in the Eastern Africa Region Year of publication: 2023 Author: Sabiti Makara Corporate author: UNESCO Nairobi This paper stems from issues that were deliberated on at a regional conference titled, Emerging Issues in the Sciences, Climate Change, Peace and Security and Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs), organized in Djibouti, in May 2017 by UNESCO Regional Office for Eastern Africa. The paper examines the issues and challenges of peace and security in Eastern Africa region. It puts into perspective higher education in the region, in terms of assess, quality, relevance, knowledge and skill products, and capacity to solve social challenges of society. The May 2017 Djibouti Conference on Higher Education, Peace and Security aimed at placing higher education at the center of understanding the complex regional challenges with regard to peace and security in a broad context, including poverty, climate change and environment, intergenerational transfer of knowledge, colonial/neo-colonial heritage, regional integration, cultural resources, and unemployment. The centrality of education as a tool for social transformation in Africa, and elsewhere is a critical element of transforming society, however that very element is up for debate. Specifically, the impact of higher education as a means of accelerating the sciences (natural and social sciences) is due for robust debate, as to whether or not, it is leading to innovations, creativity, and research-led solutions to challenges of society. The critical issue for the Djibouti Conference deliberations was: could Science, technology and in more recent years, information and communications technology, lead to transformation of society in the region? The other issue was: is it only the natural sciences that have the greatest potential for that transformation, or that the social sciences and humanities are relevant in this context? Besides, since issues of peace and security are complex, could multidisciplinary approaches be appropriate? This paper is not a rapporteur's report of the Djibouti conference. It is a set of reflection and reframing of issues for further debate and discussion. Ministry of Education The Asia-Pacific Teacher Exchange for Global Education (APTE), which has been in place since 2012, marks its 10th anniversary this year. APTE had been conducted according to the existing programme execution system and flow chart until 2019. However, the Office of International Teacher Exchange (ITE) focused on online exchange due to the pandemic crisis. This year’s APTE programme followed last year’s online formula and presented a new direction for utilization even post-pandemic. These efforts are expected to enhance global educational competencies for a more sustainable Global Citizenship Education. 2022 Youth Leaders’ Mentorship & Local GCED Projects: Activity Report Year of publication: 2022 Corporate author: APCEIU This report summarizes 15 GCED projects implemented in different parts of the world by the alumni of APCEIU’s Youth Leadership Workshop on GCED in 2022. Ranging from community advocacy for global citizenship to girls’ empowerment projects, 15 GCED initiatives have been taken by the team of 15 young leaders in their own communities in Asia, Europe, Africa, Latin America, and the Caribbean. APCEIU offers GCED training programmes targeting youth leaders around the globe to encourage them to achieve the SDGs through global citizenship and GCED. Since 2015, the Youth Leadership Workshop on GCED has been held every year in the Republic of Korea, inviting 50 young global leaders to take part in an intensive training programme where they share their actions, deepen their knowledge on global/local issues, enhance their motivation to take actions for a change, and establish the young leaders’ network on GCED. Since 2021, it has been shifted to a comprehensive training programme composed of online training workshops, mentorship, and local project implementation.
