Artificial Intelligence Needs Assessment Survey in Africa Year of publication: 2021 Author: Prateek Sibal | Bhanu Neupane Corporate author: UNESCO There are encouraging signs of AI innovation and development across Africa, from community run AI classes over weekends, AI training bootcamps for students and young researchers to the establishment of private sector and government driven innovation hubs across the continent. Even as there is an enormous potential for AI development, there are also legacy challenges in terms of infrastructure availability as well as human and institutional capacity gaps to develop and govern AI to optimise benefits and minimise harms. Building upon the recommendations of UNESCO report Steering AI and Advanced ICTs for Knowledge Societies, the findings of this survey aim to bridge the information gap concerning the strategic priorities, policy measures, developmental challenges, human and institutional capacity needs, and legal frameworks concerning AI in African countries. De même, le développement et la gestion de l’IA dans le but d’optimiser les avantages et de minimiser les dommages se heurtent à des problèmes de compétences humaines et institutionnelles. Les conclusions de cette enquête, qui s’appuient sur les recommandations du rapport de l’UNESCO Piloter l’IA et les TIC avancées pour les sociétés du savoir visent à pallier le déficit d’informations sur les priorités stratégiques, les mesures politiques, les défis relatifs au développement, les cadres juridiques et les besoins de compétences humaines et institutionnelles en matière d’IA dans les pays africains.

L’objectif de cet outil est de maximiser l’impact de notre action avec plus d’enfants sensibilisés, étant à même de comprendre leurs droits, dénoncer des situations de danger et devenir acteurs de la solidarité. Based on the same pedagogy as the Yalla! Pour les droits de l'enfant (Children's Rights) project, we offer a set of turnkey, scalable and interactive teaching tools. Children can learn while having fun with videos, games, quizzes and challenges. A surprise is also hidden in the lessons .... Our project sponsor, Joan Faggianelli, animates the teaching videos. The platform can be used in class by the teacher or at home with parents. The aim of this tool is to maximize the impact of our action, with more children aware of their rights, able to denounce dangerous situations and become actors in solidarity.

Les choix éditoriaux et iconographiques du site traduisent scrupuleusement cette volonté de ne pas les choquer. Le site a été conçu à partir du questionnement des enfants sur cette période.- Qui étaient ces personnes que les nazis ont voulu assassiner ?- Dans quels pays vivaient-elles ? Quelles langues parlaient-elles ?- Quels ont été les parcours propres à chacune d’entre-elles ?Le Grenier de Sarah permet aux enfants de naviguer sur le site de façon autonome. Toutefois, il est conseillé aux adultes de les accompagner lors de leur première visite afin d’instaurer un dialogue et de répondre à d’éventuelles questions.Pour y répondre, trois rubriques, « Il était une fois », « Des mots à l’oreille » et « En noir et blanc », donnent des clefs de compréhension.- Dans « Il était une fois », des contes donnent un aperçu de la diversité des cultures juives. - Dans « Des mots à l’oreille », des expressions en hébreu, yiddish, judéo-espagnol et judéo-arabe ouvrent une fenêtre sur la pluralité du judaïsme. - Dans « En noir en blanc », neuf parcours témoignent de la vie quotidienne des Juifs pendant la guerre. En cliquant sur l’album photo, l’enfant choisit d’entendre un des récits de vie proposés.Tout au long de chaque parcours, des définitions et des documents, sont à la disposition du jeune visiteur. Pour les enseignants, un espace pédagogique spécifique a été créé afin d’y trouver des ressources complémentaires et des pistes de travail. Sarah’s attic is a website introducing to the Shoah History. It was specifically created for children from age 8 to 12 and respects their sensibility as young visitors. The contents and iconography are carefully intended to suit their emotional and cognitive abilities.The website was designed and elaborated from questions asked by children in History classes teaching this time period - Who were these persons the Nazis wanted to murder?- In which countries did they live? Which languages did they speak?- What were their personal experiences? Sarah’s attic enables children to navigate through the website on their own. Nevertheless, we recommend that adults accompany them on their first visit in order to create a dialog and answer possible questions.As part of a school or extra-curricular framework, this program can be used in small groups with the guidance of an adult.In order to answer these questions, three sections “Once upon a time”, “Words to my ear” and “In black and white” give keys to understanding the event.- In “Once upon a time”, tales give a glimpse of the diversity of Jewish cultures. - In “Words to my ear”, expressions in Hebrew, Yiddish, Judeo-Spanish and Judeo-Arabic open a window on the pluralism of Judaism. - In “In Black and white”, nine personal itineraries bear witness of the daily life of Jews during the war. Along each personal story, definitions and documents are available to the young visitor.For teachers and educators, a specific educational section contains additional resources, guidelines and teaching materials.

Enrichie et actualisée régulièrement par l'équipe du Centre, l'Égalithèque sera très prochainement participative : les membres du Centre pourront soumettre un outil qui sera contrôlé avant d'être référencé. The Égalithèque is a database unique in France, containing thousands of guides, exhibitions, books, posters, videos, live shows, slide shows, training courses, quizzes, etc. on gender equality and the fight against gender violence. World Heritage, No.104 Year of publication: 2023 Corporate author: UNESCO As the extended 45th session of the World Heritage Committee begins in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, we express our gratitude to our hosts for convening the first in-person Committee since the onset of COVID-19. Surrounded by old friends and young professionals alike, we are reminded that this meeting is more than the sum of important decisions taken. It is a powerful platform where we rekindle the sense of ‘heritage community’ and renew our commitment to heritage. This issue of World Heritage magazine features African heritage leaders who are empowering peers and creating positive ripple effects from Egypt to Mozambique. A report on climate change details the critical benefits provided by World Heritage forests notably through carbon absorption, with one caveat – their capacity will continue to decline unless we act now. A compelling story comes from Havana, Cuba, where a major UNESCO programme Transcultura is blending tangible heritage, intangible practices and contemporary creativity, true to the way culture intersects in the local communities. Readers may notice the new design of this World Heritage magazine, which pays homage to the original iconic look. The first issue in 1996 put a spotlight on the accelerating international cooperation to conserve Angkor, bearing fruit in 2004 with the removal from the List of World Heritage in Danger. Just as the magazine has been a witness to history, it continues to champion the evolving principles of heritage safeguarding. This is why this revamped magazine will centrally feature stories of custodians, innovators and trailblazers, in line with the 'fifth C' (Communities) of the Strategic Objectives. The words by the 80-year-old Havana resident Noemí Moreno should echo with many of us: 'In the end, we are nothing more than a bird that comes and flies away. History is what remains'. And so we get to work together, pooling experience gained over the past five decades of the 1972 Convention and the ancestral knowledge passed down over centuries, to preserve the remnants of history as best as we can.
