Countering Terrorism through Education of Populations: The Case of African Countries Year of publication: 2011 Author: Simon M. Lelo Terrorism has become a major concern of current governments. African countries are also involved in counter- terrorism but, due to several internal security and development problems, their effective participation in the combat against terrorism is very limited. They need capacity and skills in order to participate actively in countering terrorism. Education is one of the most appropriate ways for preparing African countries to prevent terrorism. Education provides not only knowledge but also capacity to make informed decisions, strategies and policies. The international community should help African countries to strengthen their education through specialized and general training programmes. Les pays africains prennent également part à la lutte contre le terrorisme ; cependant, à cause de problèmes de sécurité nationale et de développement, leur participation effective dans le combat contre le terrorisme reste très limitée. Ces pays manquent de moyen pour pouvoir y participer de manière plus active. Ainsi, l'éducation doit être privilégiée afin de soutenir les efforts de prévention dans les pays africains. L’éducation n'apporte pas seulement des connaissances aux apprenants, elle permet également de prendre des décisions, et de mettre en place des stratégies et des mesures de manière informée. La communauté internationale doit aider les pays africains à renforcer leurs systèmes éducatifs à travers divers programmes de formation.

대학 영어수업에서 세계시민교육에 관한 연구 (언어과학 31권 1호) Year of publication: 2024 Author: 박수정 | 민수정 Corporate author: 한국언어과학회 선행연구들을 살펴보면, 다양한 교과목에서 다양한 연령을 대상으로 세계시민의식의 함양을 위한 교육적 접목이 이뤄지고 있다. 하지만 대학생을 대상으로 한 세계시민의식과 관련된 연구는 미비한 실정이고, 특히 세계시민의식과 접목된 대학 교양영어 수업과 관련된 연구들도 많지 않다. 지속적인 세계시민의식 함양을 위한 교육적 모델 및 교육적 개입에 관한 연구가 충분히 이뤄져야 함에도 그렇지 못한 실정이다. 이에 본 연구에서는 우리나라 대학생들이 어느 정도 세계시민으로서의 역량을 갖추고 있는지 알아보고, 유엔에서 제시한 17개의 지속가능한 발전목표를 적용한 대학 교양영어 수업을 통해 우리나라 대학생들의 세계시민의식 교육 방안을 모색하고자 한다.

세계시민교육에서 공감 함양을 위한 그림책 활용 (한국초등교육; Vol. 35, No. 3) Year of publication: 2024 Author: 한유미 | 이경윤 Corporate author: 서울교육대학교 초등교육연구원 오늘날 전염병, 전쟁, 기후 위기와 같은 문제들은 국가와 지역을 초월한 전 지구적 협력이 필요하다. 이에 국제사회는 글로벌 문제 해결에 참여할 수 있는 세계시민의 양성을 강조하고 있다. 특히 사회과 교육과정은 바람직한 세계시민의 자질을 함양하기 위한 주요 교과로, 공동체 의식과 배려, 협력의 실천을 중요시하고 있다. 그러나 현재의 사회과 교육과정은 인지적 요소에 집중되어 있으며, 공감함양을 위한 교수ㆍ학습이 부족한 상태이다. 바람직한 세계시민의 자질을 함양하기 위해서는 인지적, 사회ㆍ정서적, 행동적 영역의 균형적인 발달이 이루어져야 한다. 본 연구는 세계시민교육에서 공감의중요성을 확인하고, 초등 사회과 세계시민교육에서 그림책을 활용한 공감 함양 방안을 제시하고자 한다. 또한 학생들은 그림책을 통해 직접 경험하지 못한 상황에 대한 이해와 공감을 통해 인류 보편적가치를 존중하고, 글로벌 문제 해결에 능동적으로 참여하는 세계시민의 자질을 기를 수 있다. 이를 위해 본 연구에서는 ‘LEARN-THINK-ACT’ 전략을 활용하여 그림책을 통한 세계시민교육의 과정을 이해하고, 생각하고, 실천하기의 단계로 제시하였다. 각 단계에서 학생들은 그림책의 내용을 바탕으로등장인물의 입장과 상황을 이해하고, 그들의 감정에 이입하고, 실제 행동으로 옮기는 과정을 통해 공감을 함양한다. 본 연구는 이러한 교육 방법이 교육 현장에서 효과적으로 구현될 수 있도록 다양한 사례와 시사점을 제공함으로써, 보다 평화롭고 지속 가능한 사회를 구축하는 데 이바지하고자 한다.

Ontario Institute for Studies in Education This Inquiry into Practice publication, Learning and Teaching Global Matters in Local Classrooms, is the most recent addition to the series. It examines and shares varied perspectives, curricula, instructional practices, and resources intended to enhance student learning related to the infusion of global and international dimensions of education into classroom and schoolwide teaching and learning. It is organized in three sections: Educator Perspectives, Inquiry into Practice, and Resources. In this introduction, we briefly discuss how the text is organized, common themes that emerged across the sections, and concluding reflections.The first section, Educator Perspectives, provides insights from a range of university scholars and fieldbased leaders who, in multiple and distinct ways, have made learning and teaching about global matters in local classrooms a core feature of their work. Each was invited to comment on purposes, opportunities, and challenges related to infusing global and international dimensions into teaching and learning. Therefore, this section offers both contrasting conceptual perspectives and concrete suggestions that can impress the reader with a sense of urgency, critique, hope, and challenge when engaging in the complex and shifting work of teaching and learning about global matters.The second section, Inquiry into Practice, presents the 11 school-based and university-linked professional inquiries undertaken over a two-year period. The inquiries focus on a range of topics including critical global citizenship, the use of children’s literature to develop students’ understanding of sustainability in science education, and the refugee experience in personal and global understanding of “home.” The inquiries were carried out mostly with OISE partner schools and districts located in the city of Toronto and the GTA (regional municipalities including Durham, Halton, Peel, and York). This region of Canada provides a distinctly international, diverse context for this type of study. Local schools and districts linked with OISE’s Initial Teacher Education program have become sites of fascinating explorations into the possibilities of learning and teaching in pluralist contexts. The collection of inquiries in this publication speaks to the process of crossing borders demarcated by tangibles such as regions, nationalities, citizenship, and also by less tangible mindsets, identities, beliefs, and understandings. The voices across the project represent stakeholders in education: including voices of youth, beginning and experienced teachers, administrators, and researchers.The Resources section provides an annotated bibliography of print, media, and web resources to support those interested in teaching with global perspectives in mind. Recommended by project leaders and participants, by the authors, and by experts with various lenses, these resources are offered as a means to extend the exploration of the topics, ideas, and questions posed throughout the publication.
