Snapshot Report: SDGs in the UNECE Region Year of publication: 2019 Corporate author: United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) This document provides a brief snapshot of some aspects of SDG performance in the UNECE region. It covers the SDGs that will be discussed at the 2019 Regional Forum on Sustainable Development for the UNECE region but it does not attempt to provide an exhaustive assessment. It only uses the available information in the UN SDG Global Database and the sources referenced there to illustrate a selected number of SDG issues. In a very few cases, when no data is available from this database and associated sources, information from other international organizations is used to provide some context to the discussions. All In: Towards Tangible Solutions for Equity and Inclusion in Education Year of publication: 2024 Corporate author: United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) All In: Towards Tangible Solutions for Equity and Inclusion in Education showcases promising practices that were successfully implemented to ensure that inclusive education really does include all children, so that the most marginalized learners – including children with disabilities, children who are out of school, children living in poverty, marginalized girls, and refugee children – have access to quality education. While many of the promising practices were initiated in response to the COVID-19 crisis, or draw upon the pandemic experience, they go beyond the immediate focus of pre- or post-COVID-19 education systems to an overall view of child well-being and the need to focus on skills for the 21st century. Many of these practices have the potential to be applied more widely within education systems and can be adapted and replicated by stakeholders in any context where innovative and inclusive approaches are needed to protect and promote children’s right to education. Ingenuity, flexibility and a commitment to true inclusion and forward-looking policies are the common thread of promising practices in this document. This publication is a complementary resource to the 2021 report: Reimagining Girls’ Education: Solutions to Keep Girls Learning in Emergencies. Over the Tipping Point: How Multiple, Overlapping Climate and Environmental Shocks and Hazards on Children in the East Asia and Pacific Region are Eroding their Coping Strategies, Exacerbating Inequality, and Forever Changing Their Futures Year of publication: 2023 Corporate author: United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) This report unveils the intensifying frequency and compounding effects of climate-related hazards intertwined with non-climate shocks like the COVID-19 pandemic and socio-economic challenges. Given that children are already facing the impacts of climate change, adaptation and resilience measures are needed now to reduce the full force of impacts. This report recommends three areas to do so: Children have continued access to the key services they need: This requires investing in climate-smart and disaster-resilient education, health, and water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) services for children, so that children can access these services despite the shocks they face; Child protection and social protection systems are in place and are climate-responsive; and There is understanding of what to expect and how to adjust as necessary, establishing and utilizing strong early warning, risk management and disaster preparedness systems. In all of this, children and young people must be at the forefront of our actions. Urgency demands that they take action themselves, leading the way with innovative solutions for both mitigation and adaptation. We must support their efforts, providing them with the necessary skills and resources to amplify their work. Above all, we owe them every opportunity for success as we work together to secure a better world for generations to come. UNICEF Humanitarian Action for Children 2019 Year of publication: 2019 Corporate author: United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) This edition of UNICEF’s report on requirements for humanitarian action highlights major emergencies affecting children and families around the world, and the results achieved by UNICEF and partners in response to those crises. Noting that more violent conflicts are raging today than at any time since the adoption of the Convention on the Rights of the Child 30 years ago, the report also describes UNICEF initiatives to improve the quality of its humanitarian response in 2019 – particularly in high-threat contexts. And if we don’t act now to keep pace with rapid change, online risks may make vulnerable children more susceptible to exploitation, abuse and even trafficking – as well as more subtle threats to their well-being.This report argues for faster action, focused investment and greater cooperation to protect children from the harms of a more connected world – while harnessing the opportunities of the digital age to benefit every child.  Frontlines - Young people at the forefront of preventing and responding to violent extremism Year of publication: 2019 Corporate author: United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) The Frontlines global report was developed by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), under the umbrella of the UNDP Youth Global Programme for Sustainable Development and Peace (Youth-GPS 2016–2020), and in collaboration with the Oslo Governance Centre (OGC). This new global research initiative was made possible with generous support by the Government of Norway. The report puts forward and synthesizes data from field case studies/focus group discussions, a mapping of youth-led actions in the five regions, a global literature review, and a global survey on Youth and countering and preventing violent extremism for practitioners, to better understand young people’s aspirations and perceptions and improve programming. It is titled “Frontlines” in recognition of the fact that young people are already at the forefront of efforts to address and prevent violent extremism (PVE). Effective and long-term prevention approaches require the active support of, and investment in, young people’s holistic development priorities, their initiatives and their participation in decision-making.   How Digital is Transforming the Lives of Young People in Small Island Developing States Year of publication: 2024 Corporate author: United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Young people represent a sizeable and vital population in Small Island Developing States (SIDS). For them, digital technologies are more than just tools; they are gateways to new horizons. Digital is creating fresh opportunities, opening doors to unconventional careers, and redefining how knowledge is acquired and shared. Young people are using digital to start new businesses, explore new opportunities, learn new knowledge and skills, and to build global connections. However, young people are also cautious about digital – and they recognise risks and issues posed by digital channels, tools, and technologies. ‘How Digital is Transforming the Lives of Young People in SIDS’ explores these opportunities and challenges by hearing from young people – in their own words. Through a bespoke survey chatbot, running on messaging platforms most used by young people living in SIDS, more than 5,000 respondents from over 30 countries discuss how they’re using digital to transform their lives and livelihoods. And the barriers and challenges that they are facing on their digital journeys. Indonesia SDG Push Framework: Unlocking New Pathways to SDG Acceleration Year of publication: 2024 Corporate author: United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) SDG Push is about realizing development ambition and redefining how we build acceleration pathways. It helps pinpoint policy choices that ‘move the needle’ towards the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals. A UNDP flagship initiative, SDG Push uses digital and data innovation, systems thinking, and futures approaches to provide a comprehensive and country-specific tool to plan and implement SDG breakthroughs in a variety of development contexts. SDG Acceleration Pathways, specific to context and need, were co-created in collaboration with Indonesia, Moldova, Namibia, Peru and South Africa. These pilots helped to refine the SDG Push approach and the digital SDG Push Diagnostic and formed the foundation of the Integrated SDG Insights Reports, presented at the 2023 SDG Summit. This integrated, modular approach includes the analysis of development trends and priorities with data visualization, integrating generative dialogue, foresight methods and economic modelling to assess the impact of potential accelerators.
