ICT Transforming Education in Africa: Final Project Report Year of publication: 2020 Corporate author: UNESCO ICT Transforming Education in Africa is a project supported by the UNESCO-Korean Funds- in-Trust (KFIT) contribution by the Republic of Korea with a focus on e-school model development, open and distance learning and ICT policy development. In the first phase of the project from 2016 to 2019, Mozambique, Rwanda and Zimbabwe piloted ICT-based innovative approaches to foster human and social development, expanding access to relevant lifelong learning opportunities and enhancing the quality of learning.The aim of this progress report is to highlight the main results of the first phase of the project. These include training of over 1,300 teachers on the pedagogical use of ICT, the development of digital resources for teachers and learners, the establishment of policies on ICT in education, and a variety of activities pilot testing the use of ICT to address fundamental challenges faced at K12- and higher education level in the beneficiary countries. The findings in this progress report inform the implementation strategy for the second phase in Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana and Senegal from 2020 to 2023. 
An Unfulfilled Promise: 12 Years of Education for Every Girl Year of publication: 2021 Corporate author: Global Education Monitoring Report Team | UNESCO Just over 25 years ago in 1995, 189 governments adopted the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action – a visionary agenda for women’s empowerment and the most comprehensive global policy framework to advance gender equality to date. Girls’ and women’s education and training featured in the document as one of 12 key areas where urgent action was needed to ensure greater equality.Since Beijing, the international community has emphasized the transformative power of girls’ and women’s education and its benefits – not only for girls and women, but for entire societies and even future generations. Under the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4 on inclusive, equitable quality education and lifelong learning sets ambitious targets to ensure equality of opportunity – including a target aiming to ensure that all girls and boys complete 12 years of education by 2030.This short paper explores the evolution of girls’ and boys’ completion rates in primary and secondary education since 1995 – and calls for action to deliver on our commitments to leaving no one behind. 
Becoming a Global Citizen: Proceedings of the International Symposium on Competencies of Global Citizens (Espoo, Finland, 5-7th October 2011) Year of publication: 2011 Author: Liisa Jääskeläinen | Taina Kaivola | Eddie O’Loughlin | Liam Wegimont Corporate author: Global Education Network Europe (GENE) | Finnish National Board of Education (FNBE) The international symposium on competences of global citizens, entitled Becoming a Global Citizen, was held in Espoo, Finland on 5 – 7. October, 2011. The symposium was organized by the Finnish National Board of Education (FNBE), the Finnish Ministry for Foreign Affairs, GENE (Global Education Network Europe) and the Hanasaari Swedish- Finnish Cultural Centre.The symposium focused on three main questions, namely:• what is global education?• what are key competences of global citizens in general education?• how can the priorities of global education be supported nationally?This publication contains the proceedings and main information gathered in the symposium. From Finland’s point of view the Symposium provided a substantial contribution to the publication called Schools Reaching out to a Global World. The publication comprises several articles on competencies of global citizens serving the next curricular reform of the entire general education sector for Finland, to be fully implemented by 2016. From the international perspectives the Symposium meant a most relevant input into the pan-European debate on perspectives for Global Education. 
Out of the Comfort Zone?: Global Citizenship Education and Cross-Sector Partnerships for Sustainable Development Year of publication: 2021 Author: Kerstin Wittig-Fergeson | Harm-Jan Fricke Corporate author: Bridge 47 This publication provides examples of partnerships involving civil society and a wide range of actors in different sectors: from policy makers to academia, from media to health services, from businesses to museums. The partnerships, initiated by Bridge 47, promoted learning about and for sustainable development using a variety of Global Citizenship Education (GCE) methods. Their experiences form the basis for suggestions that aim to encourage further explorations of cross-sector collaborations. 
Global Education Monitoring Report 2023: Technology in Education; A Tool on Whose Terms? Year of publication: 2023 Corporate author: UNESCO | Global Education Monitoring Report Team This report recommends that technology should be introduced into education on the basis of evidence showing that it would be appropriate, equitable, scalable and sustainable. In other words, its use should be in learners’ best interests and should complement face-to-face interaction with teachers. It should be seen as a tool to be used on these terms. Midway to the deadline, the 2023 Global Education Monitoring Report assesses the distance still to go to reach the 2030 education targets. Education is the key to unlocking the achievement of other development objectives, not least the goal of technological progress. 
Empowering Minds: A Round Table on Generative AI and Education in Asia-Pacific Year of publication: 2023 Corporate author: UNESCO Office Bangkok and Regional Bureau for Education in Asia and the Pacific The emergence of generative AI, a recent groundbreaking artificial intelligence (AI) technology capable of producing sophisticated content from text and images to simulations and audiovisuals, has become a transformative force across multiple sectors. Popular applications like OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Anthropic’s Claude are prime examples of the rapidly expanding range of generative AI tools that are having an impact in education across the Asia-Pacific. These tools offer unprecedented opportunities for enabling personalized learning experiences at scale and expanding access to high-quality learning resources. However, as generative AI increasingly reshapes classrooms, critical questions remain unanswered, such as:- How can generative AI be ethically and responsibly integrated into educational settings?- What policies and safeguards are needed to address issues like misinformation, algorithmic bias and threats to academic integrity?- What challenges do Asia-Pacific countries face in harnessing generative AI in education, given the region’s unique context?- What are the strategies for Asia-Pacific countries to take up opportunities offered by generative AI, while mitigating the risks? In response to these questions and emerging challenges in the region, the UNESCO Regional Office in Bangkok (UNESCO Bangkok), in collaboration with The Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization (SEAMEO), organized the regional experts meeting on 7-9 November 2023 in Bangkok, Thailand. This hybrid meeting, titled ‘Empowering Minds: A Round Table on Generative AI and Education in Asia-Pacific’, explored the implications of generative AI for teacher training and development. It served as an important platform to leverage opportunities and mitigate risks of generative AI in education across the Asia-Pacific region. 
Synergy Solutions for a World in Crisis: Tackling Climate and SDG Action Together Year of publication: 2023 Corporate author: UNDESA | UNFCCC In May 2023 UNDESA and UNFCCC Secretariat co-convened the Expert Group on Climate and SDG Synergy. The Group consists of 14 renowned experts from diverse thematic and geographic backgrounds who were given the task of developing the First Global Report on Climate and SDG Synergies. This report demonstrates that aggressively acting on climate and development in an integrated and synergistic way is an important opportunity to achieve the course correction the UN Secretary- General has called for. It highlights some of the challenges but also the opportunities if the international community is seriously committed to enhancing these synergies and thereby addressing these challenges. The report is designed to provide a broad overview of available data and evidence, insights from experts on the frontlines, and recommendations for enhancing synergistic action across the 2030 Agenda and the SDGs. This first edition will form the basis for future iterations, which will entail a wider scope of sectors, and thematic areas and deep dives on specific issues pertaining to strengthening and operationalizing synergic climate and SDG actions at all levels. 
The Sustainable Development Goals Report 2023: Special Edition Year of publication: 2023 Corporate author: UN DESA The annual report, a joint effort of the global statistical community, was launched during the UN High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development as leaders from governments and different sectors of society gathered to chart strategies and efforts to fully implement the SDGs. The report provides essential data that allows decision-makers to guide efforts toward a sustainable recovery.
