세계시민을 위한 국제이해교육 Year of publication: 2003 Corporate author: APCEIU International Commission on Education for the Twenty-first Century of UNESCO proposed “Learning to Live Together” as the worldwide educational goal at the twenty-first century. Also, as many countries have become multiethnic or multicultural societies due to increasing interdependences, globalization and ICT, the necessity and importance of Education for International Understanding (EIU) on how to live in harmony with others is growing. In Korea, EIU was included as a selective subject for creative experience activities in the seventh national curriculum and the number of schools teaching EIU on the ground has been increasing since 2000. However, in many cases what to teach was left up to teachers’ discretion owing to the lack of clear guidelines or materials. This book is comprised of systematized educational goals and contents in accordance with primary and secondary school curricula, and was developed by Asia-Pacific Centre for Education for International Understanding (APCIEU) under the auspices of UNESCO for its first three years since its establishment in 2000. EIU as a school subject aims to provide students with knowledge, values and ethical attitudes needed for the people of global society to move beyond the borders of ethnicity, culture and religion into a life of peaceful coexistence. Within the frame of EIU, students learn about cultural relativity and universal values. Based on holistic perspective, this book is designed with the following five units - multicultural understanding, issues of globalization, respect for human rights, a peaceful world, and sustainable development - to be utilized for learning at the level of primary and secondary level students.

Education for international understanding: toward a culture of peace (SangSaeng vol1. autumn 2001) Year of publication: 2001 Author: Swee-Hin Toh Corporate author: APCEIU Over the past several decades of political, economic, social and cultural changes and developments throughout the world, the idea of education for international understanding (EIU) has evolved through the work of innumerable educators, researchers, institutions and organizations. Initially, the focus in school and tertiary programs tended to emphasize the need to increase the level of knowledge about other nations, societies and cultures as a key means to promote better, more “peaceful” international (economic and political) and intercultural relations. Especially in universities of the “North,” area studies of different regions and countries expanded and found their way into school-based curricula. In part, EIU was deemed important and helpful in the development of human resources needed to implement foreign aid programs. It was also a response to the increased internationalization of campuses due to the growing numbers of foreign/overseas students. By the 60s, however, a variety of social and political forces and movements were beginning to impact on this earlier focus of EIU. First, it was no longer viewed only in terms of understanding the relations between “nations” or “societies” across political and economic boundaries. EIU would need also to look closely at local and internal issues, and at problems of one’s own society that might significantly influence the direction and nature of international relations. Furthermore, conceptual perspectives on EIU began to reflect a spectrum of frameworks of understanding and analysis, from “conservative” and “liberal” to more “critical” paradigms. Underpinning the critical approaches was a questioning of the power inequities characterizing the international order of nation-states, and the need to overcome such gaps if the original vision of “world peace” was to be fulfilled. Third, the evolving theory and practice of EIU took on a host of societal, international and increasingly global issues deemed urgent at all levels of life.

EIU Best Practice Series No. 5: Peace and human rights education through education for sustainable development: lessons from four case studies in the Philippines Year of publication: 2007 Corporate author: APCEIU The four case studies showed that EIU through peace and human rights education in the context of education for sustainable development can build a critical mass of Filipinos who will reject wars and promote social security. Education can play a role to direct the children, youth, and adults toward peace building and better understanding of cultural differences. It should also be noted that when institutions adopt a peace culture, establishing local and international organizations and putting up resources for various peace-building initiatives become possible. Educational intervention can effect changes in the minds of men and build a lasting and substantive foundation for peace based on justice and respect for human rights.

Coming from Africa and Asia, 25 educators have written stories about their girls during the programme to share with readers all over the world. As the title implies, these series are about real people living on the fringes of society especially girls in their neighbor having challenges on their way to access quality education.
