Its purpose is two-fold: contribute to the integration of education for sustainable development into teaching practices through education initiatives, originally implemented in the Caribbean that may be feasible to replicate in the various classrooms, schools and communities; promote reflection, discussion and creation of innovative practices that involve all teachers in Decade activities and contribute to the making of sustainable societies. This document illustrates how different wills can come together moved by a desire to materialise common projects. Thus, this effort represents the work of regional specialists working in close cooperation with UNESCO Regional Bureau for Education in Latin America and the Caribbean, as well as the financial support of the Government of Japan. La Educación sobre el medio ambiente en acción: una historia de la reserva de biosfera Tonlé Sap de Camboya Año de publicación: 2013 Autor: Keat Kunthea Osmose is a not-for-profit association linking community-based conservation, ecotourism and environmental education in Prek Toal. Osmose has been supported by UNESCO in Phnom Penh in many projects including: production of a poster depicting the flooded forest and plants of the Tonle Sap Biosphere Reserve, handicraft, and particularly, environemental education (EE). EE was initiated in 2000 when Osmose realized there was an increase in the child population and that education was therefore needed in order to protect their natural resources. Material educativo para los países situados en zonas montañosas: una manera creativa de educar sobre el medio ambiente Año de publicación: 2011 Autor: Thomas Schaaf Autor corporativo: UNESCO Entitled: A Teaching Resource Kit for Mountain Countries, it is a new environmental education kit similar to the Teaching Resource Kit for Dryland Countries published by UNESCO in 2008. It is based on the same innovative approach appealing to the creativity and artistic sensibility of pupils aged around 10 to 15, and is intended for secondary-school (and late primary-school) teachers and their pupils, this time living in mountain ecosystems, where climate and environmental conditions are harsh, often varying between extremes, and which are subject to the problems of erosion. As an educational tool, the kit offers a practical and attractive way of helping teachers and their pupils towards a better understanding of the environmental problems of their region and to stimulate their quest for possible solutions. In this respect, its content is a further contribution to the United Nations General Assembly’s resolution proclaiming 2002 the International Year of Mountains and is also consistent with the activities developed as part of the United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (2005-2014), the promotion of which is UNESCO’s responsibility. 
Re|pensar las politicas culturales: 10 anos de promocion de la diversidad de las expresiones culturales para el desarrollo Año de publicación: 2015 Autor corporativo: UNESCO This Report presents the work of fourteen independent experts, as well as the Secretary of the Convention and the Principal Editor, who have analysed the implementation of the Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions. Its purpose is to move forward the process of monitoring the Convention’s implementation that was put in place by a mechanism of Quadrennial Periodic Reports (QPRs) approved by the Convention’s Conference of Parties in 2011. The contributors have consulted the 71 reports submitted by Parties, but have also used data derived from other, non-official sources and have drawn upon their own expert experience. This approach favours discovery of the environment through the senses, and emphasizes the visual and exploratory aspects of environmental study. The idea of using creativity and artistic sensibility to promote ecological awareness may in the future become a source of collaboration to be explored in detail by the different sectors of UNESCO.

This report shows that education will not deliver its full potential unless participation rates increase dramatically and sustainable development guides education system reform. It also warns of the destructive impact that climate change, conflict, unsustainable consumption and the increasing gap between rich and poor have on education. A huge transformation is needed if we are to create sustainable futures for all. Climate change is one of the most urgent challenges of sustainable development and a key action theme in the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (DESD). ASPnet schools around the world work on Climate Change Education in order to enable students to make informed and responsible decisions, turn passive awareness into behaviour change and make sustainable behaviours a daily habit. The development of good practices and innovative educational materials in climate change education is a key element in ASPnet’s strategy to meet the pressing educational needs of the future generation. This newsletter highlights only a few of the large number of activities of ASPnet worldwide.

As such, water shortages and lack of access may limit economic growth in the years to come, according to the World Water Development Report 2016. From its collection, through various uses, to its ultimate return to the natural environment, water is a key factor in the development of job opportunities either directly related to its management (supply, infrastructure, wastewater treatment, etc.) or in economic sectors that are heavily water-dependent such as agriculture, fishing, power, industry and health. In its analysis of the economic impact of access to water, the report cites numerous studies that show a positive correlation between investments in the water sector and economic growth. It also highlights the key role of water in the transition to a green economy.

Sustainable development starts with safe, healthy, well-educated children. Participation in quality physical education (QPE), as part of a rounded syllabus, enhances young peoples’ civic engagement, decreases violence and negative patterns of behaviour, and improves health awareness. The UNESCO QPE Policy Package is an original piece of work, which draws upon results from extensive global research (including the Worldwide Survey of School Physical Education). These guidelines, designed for global application and local adaptation, provide a means of analysing current policy through practical guidance and a ‘how-to’ approach. The materials have been developed in consultation with key partners including the European Commission, the International Council for Sport Science and Physical Education (ICSSPE), UNDP, UNICEF, UNOSDP and WHO.
