Women’s Rights in Review 30 Years after Beijing Año de publicación: 2025 Autor corporativo: United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women) In 2025, the world celebrates 30 years of achievement on the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, a visionary 1995 plan agreed by 189 governments to achieve the equal rights of all women and girls. The UN Secretary-General’s report on the 30-year review and appraisal of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action reflects global, regional, and national reviews of 159 countries, summarizing progress and priorities for further action. It finds that many countries have made strides on gender equality and women’s empowerment, from banning discrimination in employment to adopting gender-responsive climate action plans. Innovation is accelerating progress, and opportunities are opening to scale up proven strategies. Yet gender discrimination remains deeply embedded in all economies and societies, imposing chronic constraints on the rights and hopes of women and girls.
Emerging Horizons: Youth Insights on Climate Change and Breakthrough Solutions; 2024 Leading Minds on Climate Action Año de publicación: 2024 Autor corporativo: UNICEF Innocenti | United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) This paper shares insights from a participatory foresight workshop designed and facilitated by UNICEF Innocenti in the framework of the Youth4Climate: Sparking Solutions event co-hosted by UNDP and the Government of Italy. This convened 100 youth-led solutions in the areas of climate education, energy, food and agriculture, and urban sustainability. By using the Three Horizons foresight approach, a dialogue was created that delineated the patterns of change young people envisaged, their shared visions for the future, and the high potential innovations they felt could be leveraged to bring that future about. The paper identifies research and policy questions to be further explored by young climate leaders, UNDP, UNICEF, and their partners.
Including Education in the Pact for the Future: An SDG 4 Youth & Student Network Contribution Año de publicación: 2024 Autor: Laeek Siddiqui | Juliette Gudknecht | Daniela Moreno Farfán | Azkha Mikdhar Autor corporativo: SDG 4 Youth & Student Network | UNESCO Inclusion is the promise towards a fair and equitable education for all. It is critical to ensuring that every youth and student succeeds. Highlighted by UNESCO in the 2020 Global Education Monitoring Report, striving towards inclusive education is non-negotiable, as education is a human right. With the current challenges of our world highlighted in the 2030 Agenda, specifically in the areas of poverty, armed conflict and digital transformation, inclusion must be an essential imperative in all policies. The Summit of the Future (SOTF) convenes on the 22 to 23 of September at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, United States. One of its outcomes, if inter-governmentally agreed-upon, would be the Pact for the Future. The Pact is action-oriented, including a chapeau followed by 5 chapters: 1) sustainable development and financing for development; 2) international peace and security; 3) science, technology and innovation and digital cooperation; 4) youth and future generations; and 5) transforming global governance. Along with the Pact are two annexures: the Global Digital Compact and the Declaration on Future Generations. This document introduces the advocacy of the SDG 4 Youth & Student Network – a network hosted by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) as the Global Education Cooperation Mechanisms Inter-Agency Secretariat – for inclusive and equitable education at the SOTF, to uphold peace, sustainable development, youth and future generations. It is essential to #IncludeEducation in the Pact and the outcomes of the SOTF for our #InclusiveFuture, to ensure that no one is left behind. It brings attention to how education is essential to global cooperation and empowering future generations, calling upon you to join us in supporting inclusive education systems, with the Global Education Meeting convened by UNESCO side by side with the G20 meeting on 31 October and 1 November 2024 in Fortaleza, Brazil.
Because youth perspectives matter: UNESCO toolbox for youth policy and programming Año de publicación: 2023 Autor corporativo: UNESCO <Short summary>Placing trust in youth voicesYoung people fear for their future. Pandemics, conflict, climate change, inequality – these are the issues defining their reality.Yet their potential to provide solutions to the multiple crises is not realized. From low representation and tokenistic approaches, to institutional obstacles to participation and limited civic spaces, young people are disconnected from influencing decisions and actions that affect their lives. They need real opportunities to participate in decision-making and contribute to practical solutions.Policy-makers, public officials and practitioners – as well as development sector and civil society actors – can and should create such opportunities for youth. This Toolbox is a comprehensive go-to resource to make that possible. It is intended to support these stakeholders in designing and implementing effective policies and programmes to address the multidimensional needs of youth at national and local levels. It consists of:• A guide for participatory youth policy design;• Intergenerational dialogue tools on holistic youth development and youth civic engagement; and• A training tool on meaningful youth engagement. Together, we can prove that youth perspectives matter.
How Digital is Transforming the Lives of Young People in Small Island Developing States Año de publicación: 2024 Autor corporativo: United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Young people represent a sizeable and vital population in Small Island Developing States (SIDS). For them, digital technologies are more than just tools; they are gateways to new horizons. Digital is creating fresh opportunities, opening doors to unconventional careers, and redefining how knowledge is acquired and shared. Young people are using digital to start new businesses, explore new opportunities, learn new knowledge and skills, and to build global connections. However, young people are also cautious about digital – and they recognise risks and issues posed by digital channels, tools, and technologies. ‘How Digital is Transforming the Lives of Young People in SIDS’ explores these opportunities and challenges by hearing from young people – in their own words. Through a bespoke survey chatbot, running on messaging platforms most used by young people living in SIDS, more than 5,000 respondents from over 30 countries discuss how they’re using digital to transform their lives and livelihoods. And the barriers and challenges that they are facing on their digital journeys.
