The Time Period of the Holocaust in the Beliefs of Primary School Children – Children’s Perspectives and the Thematization of the Holocaust and National Socialism in Primary-School Instruction (in General Subjects) Año de publicación: 2012 Autor: Andrea Becher The original title: Die Zeit des Holocaust in Vorstellungen von Grundschulkindern – Perspektiven von Kindern und die Thematisierung von Holocaust und Nationalsozialismus im (Sach-)Unterricht der Grundschule(In I. Kinder und Zeitgeschichte: Jüdische Geschichte und Gegenwart, Nationalsozialismus und Antisemitismus, Supplement, 8, pp. 101–120) This is a summary of a study of German primary school children’s beliefs about the Holocaust, based on interviews conducted in two classes in 2005. The author finds that the children almost exclusively focus on Hitler; that one can find “latent anti-Semitic fragments” in their statements; that, even without formal education, the pupils still possess knowledge about the Holocaust; and their main source of information about Nazi Germany seems to be family members. However, the family narratives mainly touch upon everyday-life and avoid the topic of the Holocaust. From these findings, the author argues that one could and should teach the Holocaust already in the German primary school. “Just Don’t Moralize!” Emotional Processes in the Pedagogical Engagement with National Socialism Año de publicación: 2008 Autor: Gudrun Brockhaus The original title: “Bloß nicht moralisieren!” Emotionale Prozesse in der pädagogischen Auseinandersetzung mit dem Nationalsozialismus(Einsichten und Perspektiven, Bayerische Zeitschrift für Politik und Geschichte, 1(8), pp. 28–33.) The article is a critical reflection on the outcomes of an empirical study (Kühner 2008; Kühner et al. 2008), based on a psychological/psychoanalytical perspective: how should we deal with emotions when dealing with the Holocaust? The author highlights the teachers’ very high expectations regarding the emotional Betroffenheit, the pressure on consensus, and the tabooisation of “political incorrectness” in the classroom, tendencies that can lead to a problematic teacher-student relationship. Thus, teachers encounter specific didactical difficulties and show a certain lack of self-assertion. Brockhaus assumes that this is based on how the teacher relates, as a person and as a pedagogue, to the heritage of National Socialism. Brockhaus concludes by insisting on the necessity to reflect openly, as students and as teachers, on the emotional processes and the reluctance caused by the topic of the Holocaust in this society. UNESCO Survey on Intercultural Dialogue, 2017: Analysis of Findings Año de publicación: 2018 Autor corporativo: UNESCO Institute for Statistics (UIS) The present report sets out the key findings of the first UNESCO survey on intercultural dialogue conducted among its Member States. The survey takes stock of the current understanding and operational mechanisms and strategies of intercultural dialogue at national level. It assesses the main issues and opportunities, current policies and legislation, available data and resources, and main stakeholders in this field. The resulting information permits an initial inventory of countryspecific intercultural dialogue policies that will function as a point of analysis for future monitoring and inform future policy-making.The questionnaire for the survey was distributed to 199 National Commissions for UNESCO in six official United Nations languages with a submission deadline of Spring 2017. There was a response rate of 21.622%. The respondents represent all geographic regions, including countries with large, middle and small populations, and over half are from developing economies. 
Understanding Policy Instrument Choice Concerning Citizenship in Education and Youth Policies: A Typology of Public Tools Año de publicación: 2018 Autor: Valérie Becquet Autor corporativo: Lien social et Politiques Whether at European or at national level, issues relating to the citizenship of young people are present in public debates and give to the implementation of specific tools. The past and the recurrence of setting up this issue on the agenda invites to reflect on the dynamics of public action. This article presents a typology of the tools gradually developed in two public sectors that concern young people: education and youth. Based on a policy instrument choice approach, it highlights that the choices made by public decision-makers to deal with citizenship issues lead to a multiplication and a diversification of the tools. This proliferation introduces suppose to reflect on the legibility of public action: if those mechanisms can be seen as complementary and as an opportunity for young people, they can also enter into tension. In a context of generational renewal of the electorate, it also calls for reflection on the consequences for young people’s practices and on the building of the perception of citizenship. Cet article propose une typologie des dispositifs progressivement développés dans deux secteurs publics qui interviennent auprès des jeunes : l’éducation et la jeunesse. En mobilisant une approche par les instruments d’action publique, il met en évidence que les choix opérés par les décideurs publics pour traiter des questions de citoyenneté conduisent à une multiplication et à une diversification des dispositifs. Cette prolifération interroge la lisibilité de l’action publique : si les dispositifs peuvent apparaître complémentaires et constituer une opportunité pour les jeunes, ils peuvent aussi entrer en tension. Dans un contexte de renouvellement générationnel du corps électoral, elle invite également à réfléchir sur les conséquences sur les pratiques des jeunes et sur la construction de leur représentation de la citoyenneté. 
Teaching about the Holocaust : Major educational predicaments, proposals for reform, and change - An international perspective Año de publicación: 2013 Autor: Zehavit Gross The aim of this article is to analyze the findings of a research project on how the Holocaust is taught around the world. The project analyzes central issues and educational events that occur while teaching the Holocaust "behind the classroom door," in public schools in different countries. Researchers from 10 nations participated in the project: Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Poland, Estonia, Scotland, Australia, the United States, Canada and Israel. One of the major findings of this research was that although the official establishment is very interested in teaching the subject of the Holocaust, teachers can find it hard to teach because of resistance by their students, who occasionally react in class with cynical, racist, anti-Semitic and antidemocratic remarks. In all the countries, researchers indicate three principal ways of handling the question of the Holocaust: education, teacher training, and research. (By the author) The challenges of Holocaust introduction and remembrance - particular and universal aspects in formal and informal interdisciplinary curricula in Israel and abroad Año de publicación: 2011 Autor: Nitza Davidovich | Dan Soen | Anat Hezkelovich In the present framework, an attempt was made to compare Holocaust instruction in Israel and in France. The comparison between the formal and informal curricula in both countries shows that both systems share this study's basic assumption concerning the inherent potential of teaching the Holocaust to the younger generation. Nevertheless, each country has a clear goal toward which it directs its students. The State of Israel, the Jewish state, perceives the Holocaust mainly through nationalist and Zionist eyes, directing the younger generation to learn particular lessons. The French model, in contrast, represents a shortened version ... devoted to the universal lessons of the Holocaust. But in the end, both systems would benefit by adopting some of the elements of the other. (By the author)
