Global Citizenship Education: Critical and International Perspectives Año de publicación: 2020 Autor: Abdeljalil Akkari | Kathrine Maleq Autor corporativo: Springer Nature | Swiss National Science Foundation This open access book takes a critical and international perspective to the mainstreaming of the Global Citizenship Concept and analyses the key issues regarding global citizenship education across the world. In that respect, it addresses a pressing need to provide further conceptual input and to open global citizenship agendas to diversity and indigeneity.Social and political changes brought by globalisation, migration and technological advances of the 21st century have generated a rise in the popularity of the utopian and philosophical idea of global citizenship. In response to the challenges of today’s globalised and interconnected world, such as inequality, human rights violations and poverty, global citizenship education has been invoked as a means of preparing youth for an inclusive and sustainable world. In recent years, the development of global citizenship education and the building of students’ global citizenship competencies have become a focal point in global agendas for education, international educational assessments and international organisations. However, the concept of global citizenship education still remains highly contested and subject to multiple interpretations, and its operationalisation in national educational policies proves to be challenging. This volume aims to contribute to the debate, question the relevancy of global citizenship education’s policy objectives and to enhance understanding of local perspectives, ideologies, conceptions and issues related to citizenship education on a local, national and global level. To this end, the book provides a comprehensive and geographically based overview of the challenges citizenship education faces in a rapidly changing global world through the lens of diversity and inclusiveness.
Integrating Gender into Global Citizenship Education (Journal of Education for International Understanding; Vol. 14, No. 1) Año de publicación: 2019 Autor: Hyeseung Cho Autor corporativo: Korean Society of Education for International Understanding (KOSEIU) The purpose of this study is to explore the contents of global citizenship education(GCE) from a gender perspective, and to lay the theoretical foundation to integrate gender issues into GCE. To this end, this research analyzes GCE textbooks published by four Metropolitan City Offices of Education employing content analysis. As results, GCE textbooks rarely include contents related to gender (in)equality by representing 5.26%, 3.81%, and 8.97% of the textbooks of elementary, middle and high school respectively. In terms of topics, although a word of gender (in)equality is mentioned as an international agenda or a global problems in textbooks, the specific concept of it or various worldwide gender inequalities issues such as gender-based violence, women in poverty, reproductive rights were excluded. In terms of format aspects of the textbooks, the textbooks present gender perspective by describing woman as an independent global citizen, and by ensuring the equality of gender composition of characters. In some cases, however, the roles of women and men in textbooks are still divided, and gender stereotype was recognized through sex=segregated activities. Based on these results, this research argues that it is required to expand the contents of GCE by including the importance of gender equality and global structural gender inequality problems, and that it is necessary to review the discourse and practice of GCE in Korea from a gender perspective.
Educación de adultos y desarrollo: La educación para la ciudadanía mundial (no 82, 2015) Año de publicación: 2015 Autor corporativo: DVV International Issue 82/2015 of the international journal Adult Education and Development (AED) explores the topic global citizenship education. In the international debates, we are witnessing a growing interest in the concept of global citizenship education. It is one of the three pillars of the Global Education First Initiative (GEFI) launched by the United Nations Secretary-General in 2012 and is being internationally promoted by the work of UNESCO. According to the GEFI, education that fosters global citizenship “must fully assume its central role in helping people to forge more just, peaceful, tolerant and inclusive societies”. The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in September 2015, refers to global citizenship as one tool to “ensure that all learners acquire the knowledge and skills needed to promote sustainable development”.The ambitions are high, but the concrete understanding of global citizenship education and its implications differ widely. Is it just another abstract concept? What meaning can the word citizenship have if it does not refer to a specific nation? What do people in different parts of the world understand by global citizenship? And how can global citizenship education be put into practice?Adult Education and Development decided to engage in the debate and invited authors from different regions, backgrounds and disciplines to share their thoughts and experiences on the topic and related questions such as identity, migration, peace, the meaning of citizenship, globalisation and sustainable development.Irina Bokova, Director-General of UNESCO, explains the organisation’s understanding of global citizenship education, and why adult education and “learning beyond the classrooms” are crucial when it comes to promoting global citizenship. Canadian author and journalist Doug Saunders (“Arrival City: How the Largest Migration in History Is Reshaping Our World”) talks about the challenges and opportunities of what he refers to as the last great human migration, that from the countryside to the cities, and about the positive role adult education can play during this transition. In the section “Citizens’ voices” people from all over the world talk about what global citizenship means to them and in what ways they see themselves as global citizens. And photographer Viktor Hilitksi travelled through Belarus and captured with his camera how villages rediscover their local traditions and cultures.

Instructional Design Based on Ecological Multiple Citizenship for Elementary Social Studies Classroom: Focusing on National Citizenship, Global Citizenship and Sustainable Development Education (Social studies education; Vol. 55, No. 1) Año de publicación: 2016 Autor: Kwangtaek Sim Autor corporativo: Korean Social Studies Association An instructional model for national citizenship, global citizenship, and sustainable development education was developed. Four lesson plans in the elementary 5thgrade social studies were suggested to show the practice of the instructional model. Three outcomes are reported. First, identity as a citizen of a nation, global citizenship, communications are interrelated. National citizenship and communications in the network society can result in a stronger vision of one’s global citizenship. This is especially the case when the wellbeing and happiness of people in neighboring countries who live across the national boundary are viewed within the domain of community- economy- ecology. Each prepares citizens through knowledge and skills that enable them to empathize, criticize constructively, and live together sustainably. The educational methods recommended to attain global citizenship perspectives are critical thinking, comparative studies, and teaching controversial issues. Those methods tend to result in a commitment to guarantee of non-domination freedom and tolerance of others. Second, discussions regarding sustainable development focused largely on deliberative engagement as a teaching method. Issues discussed were: speculative banking and its regulation; medical treatment and education as value goods; the steps necessary for households and businesses to attain sustainability; and environmental justice and social equity. The educational methods recommended to live together sustainably are planning and practice for grassroots democratic communities’ solidarity by applying back-casting strategy and systematic thinking. Thirdly, social studies classrooms intent on to enhance national citizenship, global citizenship, and sustainable development have a five step task. They, should emphasize comparison and critique→ discussion→ empathy→ planning and lastly the engagement of learners in content critical to ecological multiple citizenship.

Transitional Justice and Education: Learning Peace (Advancing Transitional Justice Series) Año de publicación: 2017 Autor: Clara Ramírez-Barat | Roger Duthie Autor corporativo: Social Science Research Council (SSRC) | United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) After periods of conflict and authoritarianism, education institutions often need to be reformed or rebuilt. But in settings where education has been used to support repressive policies and human rights violations, or where conflict and abuses have resulted in lost educational opportunities, legacies of injustice may pose significant challenges to effective reform. Peacebuilding and development perspectives, which normally drive the reconstruction agenda, pay little attention to the violent past. Transitional Justice and Education: Learning Peace presents the findings of a collaborative research project of the International Center for Transitional Justice and UNICEF on the relationship between transitional justice and education in peacebuilding contexts. The book examines how transitional justice can shape the reform of education systems by ensuring programs are sensitive to the legacies of the past, how it can facilitate the reintegration of children and youth into society, and how education can engage younger generations in the work of transitional justice.
