Climate Change Education for Sustainable Development: the UNESCO Climate Change Initiative Año de publicación: 2010 Autor corporativo: UNESCO The UNESCO Climate Change Initiative was launched by Director-General Irina Bokova in Copenhagen during the 15th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC COP15). It seeks to reinforce the scientific, mitigation and adaptation capacities of countries and communities that are most vulnerable to the effects of climate change. It focuses on a select number of strategic issues in line with The UN System Delivering as One on Climate Change action plan and The UNESCO Strategy for Action on Climate Change. The Initiative is based on four thematic areas: scientific, educational, environmental and ethical. Key objectives will be achieved through intersectoral and interdisciplinary cooperation, coordinated field activities, and networking. Special attention is given to UNESCO’s two global priorities, Africa and gender equality, as well as to the increased vulnerability of Small Island Developing States (SIDS).The UN System “Delivering as One” on Climate Change During the 13th session of the Conference of Parties to the UNFCCC in Bali, Indonesia, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon presented an unprecedented coordination effort to bring together all the diverse perspectives, expertise and strengths of the UN system so as to deliver as one in the critical area of climate change. The initiative brings together expertise and ongoing work in diverse areas ranging from science and technology to agriculture, transport, forestry and disaster risk reduction, to address both mitigation and adaptation. It brings together the normative, standard setting and knowledge sharing capacities of the system with its operational reach in order to support the most vulnerable. The overall objective is to maximize existing synergies, eliminate duplication and overlap, and optimize the impact of the collective effort of the UN system.To ensure better coordination, convening responsibilities were assigned to UN system entities with a large volume of activities in the five focus areas and four cross-cutting areas. Extreme weather events such as storms, cyclones and heat waves are becoming more frequent and intense. Right to Education Handbook Año de publicación: 2019 Autor corporativo: Right to Education Initiative (UK) The ultimate aim of this handbook is to facilitate the realization and universal enjoyment of the right to education. Its objective is not to present the right to education as an abstract, conceptual, or purely legal concept, but rather to be action-oriented. Where possible, practical guidance is given on how to implement and monitor the right to education along with recommendations to overcome persistent barriers. It seeks to do this by:  Increasing awareness and knowledge of the right to education. This includes the normative content of the right to education, states’ legal obligations, the various sources of law regarding the right to education, what states must do to domestically implement the right to education, how to monitor the right to education, and how to increase accountability of the right to education.  Providing a summary of current debates and issues regarding education and what human rights law says about them, including on forced migration, education in emergencies, the privatization of education, and the challenge of reaching the most marginalized. Providing an overview of the UN landscape and its mechanisms, including a clear understanding of the role of UNESCO and more generally the UN, as well as all relevant stakeholders in education, particularly civil society. UNESCO’s Strategy on standard-setting instruments in the field of education (2016-2021) encourages Member States of the Organization to use normative action in relation with the right to education as a strategic tool to implement and achieve SDG4. In line with this, this handbook – specifically foreseen by the Strategy– will also serve as a reference tool for the design and organization of training modules and workshops in the field of right to education. Finally, the handbook will also be an important reference for those working towards the achievement of SDG4, by offering guidance on how to leverage legal commitment to the right to education as a strategic way to achieve this goal.   Global Education Monitoring Report, 2019: Migration, Displacement and Education: Building Bridges, Not Walls Año de publicación: 2018 Autor corporativo: UNESCO | Global Education Monitoring Report Team The 2019 Global Education Monitoring Report examines the education impact of migration and displacement across all population movements: within and across borders, voluntary and forced, for employment and education. It also reviews progress on education in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.Two new global compacts on migrants and refugees recognize education’s role and set objectives aligned with the global commitment to leave no one behind. This report is a vital toolkit for these compacts.
