Education for human rights and citizenship: the challenges of inter-generational justice

The 13th annual International Conference for Education and Democratic Citizenship (ICEDC) addresses issues of rights and responsibilities in a globalising world. Talks will address education for human rights and democratic citizenship from a variety of disciplines.
The ICEDC annual conference is a meeting place for scholars, researchers, graduate students, education policymakers and civil society activists from across the world. It is a unique opportunity to present and discuss current research and policy relating to education for human rights and democratic citizenship.
Background
In most societies, children and young people struggle to make their voices heard. They are excluded from formal political mechanisms and are frequently regarded as lacking the competence to contribute to decision-making processes that affect them. Young people also face a world of political and social uncertainties in which information sources are not always reliable. Climate change, terrorism, hate speech and xenophobia confront them in the starkest terms. Democracy appears fragile and not always capable of satisfactorily addressing these issues.
This conference considers how educational policy and education professionals, including teachers, can respond to these challenges.
Intergenerational justice is the aim of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Sustainable development includes โsustainable lifestyles, human rights, gender equality, promotion of a culture of peace and non-violence, global citizenship and appreciation of cultural diversity and of cultureโs contribution to sustainable developmentโ (SDG 4). The UN Declaration on Human Rights Education and Training (UNDHRET) supports โempowering persons to enjoy and exercise their rightsโ. This is particularly important for children and young people.
