Media and Information Literacy by Design: Can AI, Journalism, and Libraries help?
ยฉ UNESCO
The Sustainable Development Goal 17 calls for the strengthening of โthe means of implementation and revitalize the global partnership for sustainable
development.โ The wave of disinformation associated with the COVID-19 pandemic threatens the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals
and democratic processes. To ensure an effective and sustainable response to this โdisinfodemicโ a collective mobilization of initiatives and resources is
necessary.
UNESCO proposes the systematic and widescale promotion of media and information literacy to build citizensโ resilience to the โdisinfodemicโ, beyond the
coronavirus pandemic. Media and information literacy (MIL) is indispensable to enable everyone, including youth, to engage critically with information, digital
technologies and the media, as well as to support their creative use and production of verified information.
UNESCO promotes the integration of media and information literacy at all levels of society in formal, non-formal and informal education as well as in social
learning. To achieve the desired impact of media and information literacy interventions, sustained and coordinated efforts are needed.
At the intersection of SDG 4, 5, 11, 16, and 17 UNESCO aims to leverage media and information literacy to foster lifelong learning and inclusive and
creative societies.
Building on the existing partnerships that UNESCO has established with various MIL stakeholders, including donors, UNESCO and the Republic of Korea are
jointly organizing the โMobilizing Partnerships and Resources for Media and Information Literacy Forum.โ
The aim of the event is to strengthen the movement and momentum for MIL through the establishment of concrete partnerships and resources to
sustainably build media and information literacy competencies of all people, in the age of disinformation. This is also in line with the aim of UNESCO to
strengthen and expand the Media and Information Literacy programme.
