Building Citizenship from Universities; University Social Responsibility and Challenges in the XXI century 발행 연도: 2011 저자: Eduardo Gasca-Pliego | Julio César Olvera-García 단체 저자: Universidad Autónoma del Estado de México The present essay contributes with a reflection on the role universities must take as agents of transformation and consolidation of the democratic model, mainly before the challenge of building full citizens, interested in the need of the physical and social environment, in collective decision making, who think of themselves as participant citizens and not only voters with their own interests in view. Distinguishable is the primordial role of university social responsibility to promote the social management of knowledge for everyone, which has as an end the construction of informed, responsible and participant citizenship, which responds to injustice, non-sustainability, violence and corruption. Rethinking the social function of the university requires defending the values proper to public education, in the sense that every citizen has equal opportunities to develop their capabilities, eliminating obstacles of social and economic nature, as well as the cultural and political that affect and hinder said development. Construir ciudadanía desde las universidades, responsabilidad social universitaria y desafíos ante el siglo XXI 발행 연도: 2011 저자: Eduardo Gasca-Pliego | Julio César Olvera-García 단체 저자: Universidad Autónoma del Estado de México El presente ensayo aporta una reflexión respecto al rol que deben adquirir las universidades como agentes de transformación y consolidación del modelo democrático, principalmente ante al reto de construir ciudadanos completos, interesados por las necesidades del entorno físico y social, por la toma de decisiones colectivas, que se conciben a sí mismos como ciudadanos partícipes y no únicamente como votantes con miras a satisfacer sus propios intereses. Destaca el papel prioritario de la responsabilidad social universitaria que promueva la gestión social del conocimiento para todos los actores sociales, que tenga como finalidad la construcción de una ciudadanía informada, responsable y participativa, que responda ante la injusticia, la insostenibilidad, la violencia y la corrupción. Repensar la función social de la universidad pública requiere defender los valores propios de la educación pública, en el sentido de que todos los ciudadanos tengan la igualdad de oportunidades para desarrollar sus capacidades, eliminando obstáculos de carácter económico y social, así como los culturales y políticos que afectan e impiden ese desarrollo.

Globalization affects citizenship when it exists among individuals and groups in society. Individual and social affiliations, characterized by anthropological features within social groups, can also impact citizenship. Thus, there may be a specific relationship between globalization and cultural, religious, or other identity patterns. Today, globalization threatens both identity and citizenship. As societies adapt to the global system through these global changes that force interaction with globalization, it becomes essential for communities to address this issue to preserve their identity and individual belonging, whether geographically or socially. PREVENT: creating “radicals” to strengthen anti-Muslim narratives 발행 연도: 2015 저자: Asim Qureshi 단체 저자: Critical Studies on Terrorism The use of de-radicalization narratives in schools, universities and hospitals has led to the criminalization of large sections of the various Muslim communities in the UK. Based on different experiences we hope to present a view of how an aggressive anti-Muslim narrative that is based on assumptions subverts the political expression/identity of individuals by turning them into potential threats. By understanding the everyday interactions with PREVENT, a picture can be formed of the way that a false presentation of narratives can lead to a person becoming an “extremist” or “terrorist”, while the truth may lie in a completely alternative place. En se basant sur des expériences différentes, nous espérons montrer comment un récit agressif antimusulman qui se fonde sur des hypothèses bouleverse les opinions /l’identité des individus et les transforment en des menaces potentielles. Chercher à comprendre comment se font les interactions quotidiennes avec PREVENT permet de saisir comment une présentation erronée des récits de vie peut conduire à présenter une personne comme un « extrémiste » ou un « terroriste », alors que la réalité est tout à fait différente. 
Education and Social Cohesion in Latin America: A Micro-political Perspective 발행 연도: 2014 저자: Silvina Gvirtz | Jason Beech 단체 저자: Universidad de San Andrés | Arizona State University This article analyses the relation between education and social cohesion in Latin America from a micropolitical perspective. Even though we acknowledge the relevance of the macro and mezzo levels, we argue that the political decisions that are made at the school level are crucial to understand the contribution of educational systems to social cohesion. We suggest that the relation between social cohesion and school micropolitics can be analysed in two dimensions: the first is related to the access and permanence of children in school, while the second is related to the curriculum. The article concentrates on the second level by analysing the relation between the curriculum and social cohesion from a local, a national, and a global perspective. Sin desconocer la importancia de los niveles macro e intermedio, se sugiere que las decisiones políticas que se toman en el nivel escolar son fundamentales para entender la contribución que hace el sistema educativo a la cohesión social. Sostenemos que existen dos niveles para pensar la cohesión social en la micropolítica de la escuela en América Latina: uno vinculado al acceso y permanencia de los niños y jóvenes en la institución y uno curricular. Tomando como eje el segundo de los niveles mencionados, proponemos que en términos del alcance de la cohesión social, la relación entre este concepto y la escuela puede ser pensada en tres dimensiones: la global, la nacional y la local.
