Teaching American Values: The Role of Social Studies Texbooks in the U.S. 발행 연도: 2005 저자: بيدرسون، باتريشيا 단체 저자: Lebanese Association for Educational Studies (LAES) The study addresses the role of social studies textbooks in the U.S. in teaching values to students. Although there is no unified curriculum for social studies in the U.S., individual U.S. states, or groups of states, might opt to use the same textbook. American social studies books emphasize the values of good citizenship, cooperation, mutual dependence and tolerance in a country characterized by wide ethnic, religious, and cultural diversity. Textbooks also emphasize information-seeking skills, which are necessary in any active democratic situation. Social studies textbooks undertake the mission of teaching the components of the American national identity, and this allows to view values and beliefs prevalent in American society. On the other hand, the study addresses the development of American social concepts and values from the white racist era to the current era of cultural pluralism, a concept built around freedom, separation between religion and the State, individualism, authority of the law and human rights. The study discusses five groups of standards, issued in the 1990’s, that are used in teaching social studies. They constitute a platform for developing social studies curricula in different U.S. states and for assessing students achievement in this subject. American textbook publishers, thus, have at their disposal standards that traditionally present the U.S. as a constantly forward-looking country, and one in which every individual can achieve success. 
اشكاليات المواطنة في التعليم بعد ثورة 25 يناير 발행 연도: 2013 저자: فرج، إلهام عبد الحميد 단체 저자: Cairo University تناولت هذه الورقة قضية المواطنة وإشكاليتها في التعليم بعد ثورة 25 يناير في مصر من خلال النقاط التالية: 1) مفهوم المواطنة، خصائصها وأبعادها؛ 2) السياسة التربوية تجاه التربية على المواطنة قبل وبعد ثورة 25 يناير في مصر؛ 3) إنعكاس السياسة التربوية على قضية المواطنة في المناهج التعليمية. وقد خلصت الورقة إلى أن الحفاظ على الوحدة الوطنية في مصر أصبح هدفا ساميا وهو يتطلب أن يصبح التعليم المصري وسيلة لتحقيق المواطنة من خلال استنارة العقول والاعتماد عل المنهجية العلمية والنقدية. وقد عرضت الورقة لعدّة نقاط يجب مراعاتها حتى يصبح التعليم وطنيا ويبتعد عن الأدلجة والتسييس منها مراعاة العلمية والموضوعية في المناهج التعليمية، والتأكيد على فكرة التعددية الثقافية والدينية التي كانت من سمات الثقافة المصرية على مدى التاريخ، التأكيد على مبدأ المواطنة في التعلم بدعم التماسك والترابط الوطني. كما تمّ التركيز على المسؤولية الملقاة على عاتق المعلمين، مما يؤكد على ضرورة أن يتم تدريبهم على استراتيجات تدريسية تستند على الحوار وتبتعد عن ثقافة التلقين. The Probelmatic of Citizenship in Education Following the January 25th Revolution 발행 연도: 2013 저자: فرج، إلهام عبد الحميد 단체 저자: Cairo University This paper dealt with the issue of citizenship and its problematics in education in the wake of the 25th January Revolution (in Egypt) through the following points: 1) The characteristics and dimensions of the concept of citizenship; 2) The educational policy regarding the education on citizenship before and after the 25th January Revolution; 3) The reflection of the education policy on the issue of citizenship in the educational curricula.The paper concluded that preserving national unity in Egypt has become a supreme aim that requires that Egyptian education becomes a means for achieving citizenship through the enlightening of minds and relying on a scientific critical approach.The paper tables several points that need to be considered in order for education to become patriotic and void of indoctrination and politicization. The points include: respecting scientific and objective thinking in the curricula, emphasizing the concept of cultural and religious pluralism that has all along been a feature of Egyptian culture and emphasizing the principle of citizenship in education through national cohesion and correlation. The paper also stresses the responsibility of teachers which requires training them on teaching strategies the are based on dialogue away from rote culture.

Two-thirds of the estimated 617 million children and adolescents who cannot read a simple sentence or manage a basic mathematics calculation are in the classroom. Too many are waiting for a quality education that never comes.As the 2018 SDG 4 Data Digest shows, it is not enough to hope that they will stay in school and somehow acquire skills in reading and mathematics. It is critical to monitor those skills as children progress through school. That requires comparable data, over time, to ensure that children – and the education systems that serve them – are on track.Given the critical importance of learning for the achievement of all the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), from poverty reduction to peaceful societies, this year’s edition of the SDG 4 Data Digest is dedicated to the theme of learning outcomes. It showcases the most comprehensive and up-to-date compilation of work to inform the learning indicators of SDG 4.The Digest discusses learning evidence on early child development, mathematics and reading skills among school-aged children, and digital and work-related skills among youth and adults. It highlights the conceptual frameworks and tools developed by leading authors and institutions to understand, measure, monitor and support learning for all. It also considers the implications of reporting for SDG 4. Recent estimates show that 31 countries experience water stress between 25% (which is defined as the minimum threshold of water stress) and 70%. Another 22 countries are above 70% and are therefore under serious water stress (UN, 2018a).Growing water stress indicates substantial use of water resources, with greater impacts on resource sustainability, and a rising potential for conflicts among users.It has been estimated that about 4 billion people, representing nearly two-thirds of the world population, experience severe water scarcity during at least one month of the year (Mekonnen and Hoekstra, 2016).

Global Citizenship Education in Latin America and the Caribbean: Towards a World without Walls: Global Citizenship Education in the SDG 4 - E2030 Agenda 발행 연도: 2018 단체 저자: UNESCO Santiago The Latin America and the Caribbean Regional Network Meeting on Global Citizenship Education “Towards a World without Walls: Global Citizenship Education in SDG 4 – Agenda E2030”, was organized by the UNESCO Regional Bureau for Education in Latin America and the Caribbean (OREALC / UNESCO Santiago) and the Asia – Pacific Centre of Education for International Understanding (APCEIU), in collaboration with the Chilean Observatory of Educational Policies (OPECH) of the University of Chile. The event, held on October 23 and 24, 2017, in Santiago, Chile, brought together regional researchers, members of civil society organizations and activists, educational communities, social movements, government educational authorities and universities. The objective of the meeting was to promote dialogue on the concept of Global Citizenship Education (GCED), deepen the regional perspective on the topic and create a network that helps strengthen the implementation of GCED in the context of the Latin America and the Caribbean region. This document summarizes the main topics addressed and issues discussed at the meeting. Subsequently, the founding document of the Regional Global Citizenship Education Network for Latin America and the Caribbean, which was elaborated in light of the meeting’s discussions, is presented.
