In the field of education, this emergency has led to the massive closure of face-to-face activities of educational institutions in more than 190 countries in order to prevent the spread of the virus and mitigate its impact. The Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) has argued that even before the pandemic hit, the social situation in the region was deteriorating, owing to rising rates of poverty and extreme poverty, the persistence of inequalities and growing social discontent. In this context, the crisis will have a profoundly negative impact on the various social sectors, particularly health and education, as well as on employment and poverty. Meanwhile, UNESCO has identified major gaps in educational outcomes, which are related to the unequal distribution of teachers in general, and of the best qualified teachers in particular, to the detriment of lower-income countries and regions and of rural areas, where indigenous and migrant populations tend to be concentrated. In the sphere of education, many of the measures that the region’s countries have adopted in response to the crisis are related to the suspension of face-to-face classes at all levels, which has given rise to three main areas of action: the deployment of distance learning modalities through a variety of formats and platforms (with or without the use of technology); the support and mobilization of education personnel and communities; and concern for the health and overall well-being of students. The aim of this document is to shed light on various consequences that these measures will have on educational communities in the short and medium term, and to offer key recommendations on how to manage those consequences in the best possible manner, drawing attention to opportunities for learning and innovation in the post-pandemic education system.  La educación en tiempos de la pandemia de COVID-19 (Inform COVID-19; CEPAL-UNESCO) 발행 연도: 2020 단체 저자: Curricular guidelines and citizenship attitudes in Latin American students: a comparative analysis 발행 연도: 2015 저자: Martín Bascopé | Macarena Bonhomme | Cristián Cox | Juan Carlos Castillo | Daniel Miranda 단체 저자: Revista Latinoamericana de Ciencias Sociales, Niñez y Juventud Curricular guidelines have become progressively relevant for educating future active citizens. In such a context, it becomes crucial to explore the relationship between the curricular guidelines and how citizenship education is currently acquired by students in Latin American countries. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to comparatively evaluate the institutional view of citizenship expressed in each curriculum and students’ attitudes on civic issues. The exploratory factor analysis and curricular descriptive statistical analysis are based in two valuable and complementary sources, respectively: The Latin American module of the International Civic and Citizenship Study (ICCS) and the Regional System of Citizenship Skills (Sredecc). By making a systematic comparison of both sources, this study reveals that several curricular aspects are consistent with students’ citizenship attitudes and beliefs, and suggests some guidelines for improving and expanding citizenship education in Latin America, considering the importance of education for the formation of an active citizenship. Write for Rights 2018: A Human Rights Education Toolkit for Educators Amnesty International The annual Write for Rights (W4R) campaign is one of Amnesty International’s biggest human rights events. In 2018 the campaign focuses on women human rights defenders who have suffered human rights violations or are at great risk because of the positions they have taken on certain human rights issues. This Human Rights Education toolkit was created to support teachers’ participation with their students in the W4R campaign. It provides a broad perspective on human rights issues and offers the opportunity to open young people’s minds to global concerns. By learning about and writing persuasive letters to help end human rights violations and achieve justice, teachers and students contribute to the international human rights movement and see for themselves how words can make a difference in the world. This toolkit was created for students aged 13 and above and is primarily designed for use in a school setting: both inside the classroom as well as in clubs or school-wide events. Activities can also be adapted for use in other, non-formal education contexts such as youth groups and community settings. The toolkit contains general activities on human rights and highlights six women human rights defenders from the W4R campaign who have made extraordinary contributions to the advancement of human rights around the world.
