K-12 AI Curricula: A Mapping of Government-Endorsed AI Curricula UNESCO Regulations on their own are insufficient to ensure AI as a common good for education and for humanity. All citizens need to be equipped with some level of AI literacy covering the values, knowledge and skills relating to AI. This report features key findings and recommendations of UNESCO’s global survey on AI curricula for K-12. It reveals that only 11 countries have developed and endorsed K-12 AI curricula and another four countries have AI curricula in development. This is a strong call for Member States to develop AI curricula for K-12 students, and to build stronger mechanisms to validate non-governmental AI curricula offered to balance the private-driven approach. The report also reveals that the learning outcomes of AI curricula need to be more focused on fostering creativity in crafting AI technologies and on contextual ethics. Teacher training is key to ensure the implementation of AI curricula, and teachers need to be trained on designing and facilitating project-based learning which is the most commonly used pedagogical methodology in existing AI curricula. The report also advises an ‘agnostic approach’ towards AI brands and products when introducing domain-specific AI technologies.  The Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Education: International Evidence From the Responses to Educational Disruption Survey (REDS) 발행 연도: 2022 저자: Sabine Meinck | Julian Fraillon | Rolf Strietholt 단체 저자: UNESCO | International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement (IEA) The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted education provision at an unprecedented scale, with education systems around the world being impacted by extended school closures and abrupt changes to normal school operations. The Responses to Educational Disruption Survey (REDS) investigated how teaching and learning were affected by the health crisis, and how education stakeholders responded to the educational disruption across and within countries. The study aimed to provide a systemic, multi-perspective, and comparative picture of the situation at the secondary education level (grade eight) in 11 countries spanning Africa, Asia, Arab region, Europe, and Latin America. While many other efforts exist that collect and provide similar information, they are mostly derived from non-representative rapid surveys and lack internationally comparable information from schools, collected in a systematic and scientific manner. The REDS International Report presents unique data, collected from countries, schools, teachers, and students for the first time, in chapters that cover several themes on which data were collected which include student and teacher well-being, students’ academic progress during the school closures, and the measures countries have implemented to keep all children learning. Initial findings provide evidence for better orienting and tailoring policy responses to crisis and provide invaluable information on what may be required to accelerate education, recover from crisis, and to strengthen the resilience of education systems in the future.  Flexible Strategies for Ensuring Quality Learning Outcomes in Education in Emergencies: NEQMAP 2021 Thematic Review 발행 연도: 2021 저자: Pina Tarricone | Ian Teo | Kemran Mestan | Kris Sundarsagar | Ashtamurthy Killimangalam | Nordin Abd Razak 단체 저자: UNESCO Bangkok The COVID-19 pandemic has interrupted schooling for students globally and challenged how policy-makers might respond and recover from this protracted emergency. In collaboration with NEQMAP, the GEM Centre has conducted a rapid review of policy and practice documents for 14 countries, and an online survey with policy-makers in 7 of them to identify the types of flexible learning strategies that were implemented over the course of this pandemic. An education in emergencies Policy Monitoring Framework was used both to guide the analysis of documents and survey data, and to provide the basis for reporting findings.  Leave No Child Behind: Global Report on Boys’ Disengagement From Education UNESCO The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development makes the promise to leave no one behind. While improving educational opportunities for girls globally continues to be of paramount importance to achieve gender equality in and through education, this focus on achieving gender parity and equality must not ignore boys. No less than 132 million boys of primary and secondary school age are out of school. To leave no child behind, UNESCO developed the first global report of this scope on boys’ disengagement from education, bringing together qualitative and quantitative evidence from over 140 countries. As this report shows, addressing boys’ disengagement from and disadvantage in education is not a zero-sum game. Supporting boys does not mean that girls lose out and vice versa. Addressing boys’ disengagement from and disadvantage in education not only benefits boys’ learning, employment opportunities, income and well-being, but it also benefits girls and the broader society. The Journey Towards Comprehensive Sexuality Education: Global Status Report 발행 연도: 2021 단체 저자: UNESCO | Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) | United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) | United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) | United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women) | World Health Organization (WHO) Comprehensive sexuality education (CSE) is central to children and young people’s well-being, equipping them with the knowledge and skills they need to make healthy and responsible choices in their lives. This report draws on multiple data sources to provide analysis of countries’ progress towards delivering good quality school-based CSE to all learners. 85 per cent of 155 countries surveyed have policies or laws relating to sexuality education, with considerably more countries reporting policies to mandate delivery at secondary education level than at primary level. However, the existence of policy and legal frameworks do not always equate to comprehensive content or strong implementation. Most countries report that they have some curricula in place but more detailed analysis suggests that it often lacks the breadth of topics needed to make sexuality education effective and relevant. Moreover, while efforts to scale-up teacher training are evident in a range of settings, research with teachers shows that many feel they lack confidence to deliver sexuality education. Surveys show that students frequently feel that they received information too late and would have preferred sexuality education to have started earlier in their schooling. There is evidence of opposition to CSE across a range of settings, often reflecting misinformation about the content, purpose or impact of such education. However, in many countries involvement of communities, including parents, school officials, religious leaders, media and young people themselves, has created a favourable environment for CSE. Recommendations to countries in this report include:Clear mandates and budgets to ensure implementation of policies and programmes that support the availability of good quality comprehensive sexuality education for all learners.Invest in quality curriculum reform and teacher training.Strengthen monitoring of the implementation of CSE.  Global Education Monitoring Report 2021/2: Non-state Actors in Education; Who Chooses? Who Loses? UNESCO Non-state actors’ role extends beyond provision of schooling to interventions at various education levels and influence spheres. Alongside its review of progress towards SDG 4, including emerging evidence on the COVID-19 pandemic’s impact, the 2021/2 Global Education Monitoring Report urges governments to see all institutions, students and teachers as part of a single system. Standards, information, incentives and accountability should help governments protect, respect and fulfill the right to education of all, without turning their eyes away from privilege or exploitation. Publicly funded education does not have to be publicly provided but disparity in education processes, student outcomes and teacher working conditions must be addressed. Efficiency and innovation, rather than being commercial secrets, should be diffused and practiced by all. To that end, transparency and integrity in the public education policy process need to be maintained to block vested interests. The report’s rallying call – Who chooses? Who loses? – invites policymakers to question relationships with non-state actors in terms of fundamental choices: between equity and freedom of choice; between encouraging initiative and setting standards; between groups of varying means and needs; between immediate commitments under SDG 4 and those to be progressively realized (e.g. post-secondary education); and between education and other social sectors.  Evidence on the Gendered Impacts of Extended School Closures: A Systematic Review UNESCO School closures to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 have affected nearly 1.6 billion learners across the globe. While the scale of these closures is unprecedented, in recent decades children in many contexts have been out of school for long periods due to other pandemics, disruptions and disasters such as floods, earthquake and conflicts – with marked gender effects.Building on the findings of 154 studies from every region of the world, this study investigates the evidence on the gendered impacts of extended school closures and periods out of school. Through a systematic review of the evidence, it highlights how these can deepen gendered exclusions and vulnerabilities – with the poorest children being the most affected.Undertaken by a team of leading academic experts on gender equality and education, Evidence on the gendered impacts of extended school closures: A systematic review aims to prevent and mitigate adverse outcomes arising from extended periods of time out of school, by ensuring that responses to current and future crises are informed by a solid understanding of their effects on children’s education, health, well-being and protection.
