These frameworks include obligations to protect and secure women and girls' right to education through the elimination of discriminatory barriers, whether they exist in law or in everyday life, and to undertake positive measures to bring about equality, including in access of, within, and through education.This paper firstly sets out the legal and political frameworks on gender equality in education to which states have committed and then describes how they have committed.In the second section, the content of states’ commitments to achieve gender equality in education is explained, including the normative content of relevant provisions found in international and regional human rights treaties and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. This section also includes a classification of states according to what legal commitments to women and girls’ right to education they have made.The final section details how states can be held accountable for failure to meet their legal commitments to gender equality in education, including what mechanisms are available and examples of how these mechanisms have been used to hold states accountable.This paper is also background paper prepared for the 2018 Global education monitoring report gender review: Meeting our commitments to gender equality in education. This task has a number of facets and complexities, because ‘gender’ is not one simple set of relationships, and the notion of gender equality in education can be read in a number of different ways. Thus developing adequate conceptualizations for the key terms (accountability, and gender equality and education) needs to take account of gender as a particularly fluid, contextually located and contested idea signaling processes, which link with different formulations of policy and practice to enhance gender equality and accountability in education.In this paper we look at a range of different meanings of accountability, distilled in the main GEM Report (UNESCO, 2017) and consider their implications in relation to debates about gender and gender equality in education. It focuses on the curriculum content and organisation, the teaching and learning methods in and outside the classroom, the assessment of students, and the training and support for teachers. These issues are addressed in the four chapters, each of which is complemented by a case study on a recent policy initiative. The report is primarily based on qualitative data and covers 42 education systems. It draws on the existing regulations and recommendations regarding citizenship education in public sector schools and includes general education and school-based initial vocational education training programmes. With a collection of literature and film reviews, and an inventory of the different museums or memorials to visit, this platform encourages the educational staff to approach this issuein an interactive way such as the organization of thematic exhibitions or class-participation in national contests.  Le grenier de Sarah Sarah’s attic is a website introducing Shoah History that addresses specifically children from age 8 to 12 with full respect of their sensitivity. This website invites them to watch and hear tales and expressions testifying of the diversity of Jewish cultures transmitted before, during and after the Second World War. In addition, nine personal itineraries bear witness to the daily life of Jews during the war, based on archive documents kept at the Mémorial de la Shoah in Paris.
