Education in Contexts of Cultural Diversity: A Study on Brazilian Educators (Iberoamerican Journal of Education; vol. 85, no. 2) Год публикации: 2021 Автор: Valentín Martínez-Otero Pérez Организация-автор: Organization of Ibero-American States for Education, Science and Culture (OEI) This article is interested in education in contexts of cultural diversity and the perspective of educators on their training needs. An ad hoc designed questionnaire was used and a mixed, quantitative and qualitative method was chosen. The questionnaire was applied to a sample of 237 Brazilian educators. The results reveal that attention to cultural diversity plays an important role in educational activity. Educators, as a whole, are sensitive to cultural diversity and its promotion, but the intercultural training received is insufficient. Little family participation is encouraged, resources are scarce and the intercultural dimension lacks pedagogical systematization. Se utilizó un cuestionario diseñado ad hoc y se opta por un método mixto, cuantitativo y cualitativo. El cuestionario se aplicó a una muestra de 237 educadores brasileños. Los resultados revelan que la atención a la diversidad cultural ocupa un papel importante en la actividad educativa. Los educadores, en su conjunto, son sensibles a la diversidad cultural y a su fomento, pero la formación intercultural recibida es insuficiente. Se fomenta poco la participación familiar, los recursos escasean y la dimensión intercultural carece de sistematización pedagógica.

The COVID-19 pandemic, with the related school closures, has added an additional burden to the existing situation, impacting learning outcomes worldwide. Assessing the status of Syrian youth’s competencies in literacy, numeracy and life skills, is essential in order to plan and implement better programmes to help them catch up on their learning losses. The ultimate goal is to support them to be able to go back into the main education streams or provide them with basic skills to cope with daily needs in their personal and professional environments.The ‘Literacy and Life Skills Assessment of Syrian Youth’ (LLASY) study measures current literacy and numeracy levels, as well as life skills of the youth of Syria of the 15 to 24 age group currently living inside the country. The sample includes youth, female and male, who are enrolled in educational or training institutions, as well as those who are out of them.
