Ministry of Environmental Protection The UN proposed sustainable development and environmental education in Agenda 21 as an educational goal for the twenty-first century. In many developed countries, environmental education has become an important part of education that is compatible with social development. China is also facing serious environmental problems that make more demands for mode of economic development and level of environment protection. Since the 1980s, although environmental education has been carried out in primary and secondary schools, its concentration was no more than imparting environmental knowledge. In order to nurture the idea of sustainable development for students and encourage them to take action for a sustainable future, the Ministry of Education of PRC has formally incorporated environmental education in the foundation course of primary and secondary schools. This guide aims to provide concrete advice for teachers and other educators to organize activities to foster students’ comprehensive understanding of the environmental system and develop their capacities to take responsibilities for environment protection in social life. It also gives advice for the school’s administrative departments to manage and support these activities, to exploit and develop multiple environmental education resources, and to apply different methods and strategies to environmental education. In addition, it provides methods of evaluating environmental education as a starting point to adjust and improve the implementation of environmental education. The Assessment Guide builds off of the Weathering Risk initiative’s methodology, and was undertaken by adelphi in collaboration with the UNDP, IOM and PIF as a part of the UNPBF-funded “Climate Security in the Pacific” project. In addition to incorporating a brief regional trend analysis and limited entry points to kick start countries’ efforts to address climate insecurity, the guide provides a “how to” for countries to undertake assessments themselves and across different levels. Anchored in the Pacific, the guide was developed through extensive consultation with regional specialists, key regional institutions, civil society and with Forum member representatives.

It is critical to equip learners with the knowledge, skills, attitudes and behaviours to effectively address the climate crisis. Globally, there remain significant gaps in how climate change education and sustainability are taught in classrooms. Getting every learner climate-ready requires a holistic approach that involves adapting curricula, training teachers, rethinking schools and empowering communities. As part of its ongoing work on Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) and its role as secretariat to the Greening Education Partnership, UNESCO is currently developing a Green School Quality Standard and Greening Curriculum Guidance to mainstream climate education in schools and educational institutions.

In the new context of a post-COVID-19 health emergency world, this approach becomes more relevant and necessary to achieve a better vision and understanding of the relationships between humans and nature; between societies, cultures and with the ecosystems on which they depend. In the chapters that make up this publication, an approach is proposed through a methodological proposal for reflection and action, the Interdisciplinary Roundtables for Environmental Education towards Sustainability, whose main objective is to strengthen and complement the environmental education processes that are carried out both in educational centers and in community groups, from an interdisciplinary, transversal perspective and with systemic thinking.
