Educating for Global Citizenship: Australia as a Case Study (Vol. 11. No. 1) Год публикации: 2019 Автор: Ruth Reynolds | Suzanne MacQueen | Kate Ferguson-Patrick Организация-автор: UCL Press Twenty-first-century teaching prepares students for a globalized existence. The long-established goal of schooling to prepare a responsible citizenry who strive for the benefit of the community must now be extended, assisting students to become global citizens, equipped to deal with global issues. This article investigates how civics and citizenship education is addressed in curricula; in particular, to what extent the ongoing issue of supporting a critical citizenry, locally and globally, is addressed. Using Australia as a case study, we present an analysis of selected Australian primary school (ages 5–12) curriculum documents to determine the extent of commitment to educating for global citizenship specifically. While intentions are good, work is needed to ensure that these are enacted within schools.  Refugee Education: The Crossroads of Globalization (Educational Researcher; vol. 45, no. 9) Год публикации: 2016 Автор: Sarah Dryden-Peterson Организация-автор: Harvard University In this article, the author probes a question at the core of comparative education – how to realize the right to education for all and ensure opportunities to use that education for future participation in society. The global competence assessment in PISA 2018 is composed of two parts: a cognitive assessment and a background questionnaire. The cognitive assessment is designed to elicit students' capacities to critically examine global issues; recognise outside influences on perspectives and world views; understand how to communicate with others in intercultural contexts; and identify and compare different courses of action to address global and intercultural issues. In the background questionnaire, students will be asked to report how familiar they are with global issues; how developed their linguistic and communication skills are; to what extent they hold certain attitudes, such as respect for people from different cultural backgrounds; and what opportunities they have at school to develop global competence. Answers to the school and teacher questionnaires will provide a comparative picture of how education systems are integrating global, international and intercultural perspectives throughout the curriculum and in classroom activities.  One Youth Can: Changing Gender Norms and Promoting Gender Equality Год публикации: 2017 Автор: Tapiwa Manyati | Remmy Shawa Организация-автор: Sonke Gender Justice This manual is intended to be a resource for those working with youth on issues of citizenship, human rights, gender, health, sexuality and violence. Alongside school closures, governments are also imposing social distancing measures and restricting the movement of people, goods, and services, leading to stalled economies. While this disruption to education and the expected reduction in global growth have far-reaching effects for all, their impact will be particularly detrimental to the most disadvantaged students and their families, especially in poorer countries. The educational consequences of COVID-19 will last beyond the period of school closures, disproportionately affecting marginalized girls. This paper uses insights from previous health and financial shocks to understand how the current global pandemic could affect girls’ education outcomes for years to come. It details how governments and international institutions can mitigate the immediate and longer-term effects of the pandemic on the most marginalized girls. The paper considers the 2014- 15 Ebola epidemic and the 2008 global financial crisis, which both have some parallels to the impact of COVID-19.  Risks in the Fight for Justice and Human Rights in Central Asia: Protecting Civil Society in the Region in 2017 Год публикации: 2018 Организация-автор: International Partnership for Human Rights (IPHR) This 2017 report provides an overview of the main trends regarding civil society in five countries of Central Asia: Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UN. ESCAP) This study considers issues pertaining to inequality and its causes in North and Central Asia, based on multidimensional indicators that are now available. It reviews where these countries of North and Central Asia stand in terms of reducing both inequality of outcomes and opportunities through cross-country comparisons. Challenges surrounding inequality of opportunities for selected social groups, namely women, young and older people, rural population and migrant workers are examined. Several concerns come to light: (1) Women tend to be both underpaid and underrepresented in decision-making processes, even though they are economically active and educated; (2) Young people are more likely to be unemployed, which could lead to social displacement; (3) Aging population in selected countries could jeopardize current pension systems which currently cover almost all older persons; (4) a rural-urban divide in terms of access as well as quality of public services remain; and (5) working conditions of migrants are precarious.
