Equity and Inclusion in Education in Asia Pacific: Building Back Better and More Equal; Policy Brief Год публикации: 2022 Организация-автор: UNESCO Bangkok Following the commitment to ensure “inclusive and equitable quality education” and promote “lifelong learning for all” made in 2015 in Goal 4 of the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development (UNESCO, 2015), the Asia-Pacific region made significant progress in terms of both access to, and the quality of, education. However, as the mid-point to the 2030 deadline approaches, millions of learners have failed to learn what they need to reach their fullest potential, producing a “learning crisis” of serious proportions. This learning crisis, however, does not affect all learners equally. Those affected most include (1) children coming from disadvantaged, marginalised families and communities – those living in poverty and in rural and remote areas and from non-dominant language groups, lower castes, and refugee and migrant families; (2) vulnerable children – girls (and sometimes boys) facing gender barriers, children with developmental delays and disabilities, and those perceived and stigmatised as gender-nonconforming or LGBTI , and (3) children and adolescents who have never been to school or were pushed out of school early. Among these groups, the impact of the pandemic has led to even greater learning loss. Thus, a framework for “building back better and more equal” needs to be at the heart of sustainable postpandemic education recovery and transformation of the education system. This post-pandemic framework calls for decisive action to protect the right to education of good quality and for measures – as spelled out below – to improve learning outcomes, especially for marginalized children made more vulnerable because of the pandemic.

Empowering Minds: A Round Table on Generative AI and Education in Asia-Pacific Год публикации: 2023 Организация-автор: UNESCO Bangkok The emergence of generative AI, a recent groundbreaking artificial intelligence (AI) technology capable of producing sophisticated content from text and images to simulations and audiovisuals, has become a transformative force across multiple sectors. Popular applications like OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Anthropic’s Claude are prime examples of the rapidly expanding range of generative AI tools that are having an impact in education across the Asia-Pacific. These tools offer unprecedented opportunities for enabling personalized learning experiences at scale and expanding access to high-quality learning resources. However, as generative AI increasingly reshapes classrooms, critical questions remain unanswered, such as:- How can generative AI be ethically and responsibly integrated into educational settings?- What policies and safeguards are needed to address issues like misinformation, algorithmic bias and threats to academic integrity?- What challenges do Asia-Pacific countries face in harnessing generative AI in education, given the region’s unique context?- What are the strategies for Asia-Pacific countries to take up opportunities offered by generative AI, while mitigating the risks? In response to these questions and emerging challenges in the region, the UNESCO Regional Office in Bangkok (UNESCO Bangkok), in collaboration with The Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization (SEAMEO), organized the regional experts meeting on 7-9 November 2023 in Bangkok, Thailand. This hybrid meeting, titled ‘Empowering Minds: A Round Table on Generative AI and Education in Asia-Pacific’, explored the implications of generative AI for teacher training and development. It served as an important platform to leverage opportunities and mitigate risks of generative AI in education across the Asia-Pacific region.
Building Resilience Through Social and Emotional Learning (SEL): Teacher Capacity-building for Sustainable Transformation of Education Systems Год публикации: 2024 Организация-автор: UNESCO Bangkok Countries in the Asia-Pacific region are committed to improving the lives of young children. Despite the progress made so far in the Asia-Pacific region and being halfway to the target date of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, there are still significant gaps in fulfilling SDG Target 4.2: 'By 2030, ensure that all girls and boys have access to quality early childhood development, care and pre-primary education so that they are ready for primary education.' The UNESCO Regional Office in Bangkok (UNESCO Bangkok) has been advocating for SEL to fully become part of the ECCE system and supporting regional Member States in building teachers’ capacity to integrate SEL into children’s learning environments. With social skills and emotional intelligence taught in schools early, children will gain knowledge, skills, and attitudes to develop healthy identities, manage emotions, and achieve personal and collective goals. This can positively contribute to society and transformative resilience through enhancing civic engagement.

Supporting Schools’ and Teachers’ Use of Assessment to Inform Learning of All Students (Using Assessment Data in Education Policy and Practice: Examples from the Asia-Pacific issue 5, December 2023) Год публикации: 2023 Автор: Ursula Schwantner | Soumaya Maghnouj Организация-автор: UNESCO Bangkok | Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) In more than half of Asia-Pacific countries, a majority of learners in primary and secondary education do not have the required foundational skills. The fifth issue of the topical case studies series 'Using Assessment Data in Education Policy And Practice: Examples From The Asia-Pacific' under the Network for Education Quality Monitoring in Asia-Pacific (NEQMAP), documents four promising practices from countries in the Asia-Pacific region on how education systems can better support teachers and schools in effectively integrating assessment practices in the teaching and learning process. The goal of this support is to identify and meaningfully address every learner’s needs, so that every learner can learn successfully. The case studies look at a variety of levers that promote a better use of assessment for learning such as how to develop teachers’ assessment literacy and capacity to design, implement and use assessment to inform their classroom teaching and learning; how to improve the use of standardized assessment data to inform teaching and learning and how to rethink the organization of instruction to address the needs of all learners.

Greening Education Partnership: Getting Every Learner Climate-Ready Год публикации: 2024 Организация-автор: UNESCO Bangkok The UN Secretary-General calls the climate crisis ‘a battle for our lives’, as we still struggle to transform our societies to reach the 1.5°C-degree path recommended by the Paris Agreement. Rapid and radical transformation at all levels and in many aspects of our life is required, with education as a central and powerful means to support the adaptation and strengthening of the resilience of learners and societies. It is also important to ensure that education systems become more resilient to climate change to create safe and climate-proof schools. Building off of the knowledge and practice accumulated in Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), a new Greening Education Partnership aims to deliver strong, coordinated and comprehensive action which will prepare every learner to acquire the knowledge, skills, values, and attitudes to tackle climate change and to promote sustainable development.
