Guidelines for Data Collection to Measure SDG 4.7.4 and 4.7.5 Année de publication: 2021 Auteur: Andres Sandoval-Hernandez | Maria Magdalena Isac | Diego Carrasco | Daniel Miranda Auteur institutionnel: UNESCO Institute for Statistics (UIS) This document provides guidance to apply a recently developed strategy to assess two indicators that embody tolerance, respect and sustainable development, namely:Indicator 4.7.4: Percentage of students in lower secondary education showing adequate understanding of issues relating to global citizenship and sustainabilityIndicator 4.7.5: Percentage of students in lower secondary education showing proficiency in knowledge of environmental science and geoscienceFollowing a thorough review and endorsement by the UIS’ Technical Cooperation Group on the Indicators for SDG 4-Education 2030 (TCG), the measurement strategy has since been applied to the last cycles of TIMSS, PISA and ICCS to produce scores to measure Indicators 4.7.4 and 4.7.5 for 60 countries. While this marks a significant achievement, it is important to acknowledge that two- thirds of UN members have yet to participate in these assessments. To promote wider participation among UN members, this document serves as a robust and easy-to-use set of guidelines offering detailed technical guidance for countries on how to collect the data necessary to produce the information to measure and monitor SDG Indicators 4.7.4 and 4.7.5. Notably, these guidelines will aid in the production of information that is comparable with that of the 60 countries for which this data already exists.  Asia-Pacific Education 2030: SDG 4 Midterm Review Année de publication: 2024 Auteur institutionnel: UNESCO Institute for Statistics (UIS) | UNESCO Bangkok This publication marks the conclusion of the collaborative national midterm reviews of SDG 4 achievement in the Asia-Pacific. More importantly, it represents the beginning of the final sprint to the 2030 finish line. It also serves as a comprehensive analytical and policymaking tool for all stakeholders in the region to reflect and be better prepared for the second half of the journey. At the midway point of implementing the Education 2030 Agenda, we are observing both challenges and progress in achieving Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG 4) in the Asia-Pacific. The region, overall, has made advances in reaching the globally and regionally most important targets under SDG 4, yet it is still far from delivering the common commitment of the Education 2030 Agenda, to ‘ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all’. Eight years into implementation, the Asia-Pacific has shown progress, especially in improving access to lower levels of basic education, as well as expanding early childhood education (ECE). Across most subregions of Asia and the Pacific, over 95% of primary school students complete primary education within the expected timeframe, while more than 80% of children one year before the official primary entry age are enrolled in organized early childhood education. However, participation in education is only one part of the puzzle, and the quality of learning, evidenced by limited data for the Asia-Pacific region on learning outcomes, remains concerning. More than half of students in Eastern and South-Eastern Asia do not reach the minimum proficiency level in mathematics at the end of lower secondary education. Overall and from a regional perspective, with priorities having accelerated in ECE, primary education reaching universal participation, and higher education being consistently regarded as prestigious to accomplish, secondary education is currently the weakest link apart from the chronically undervalued technical vocational education and training path. Fulfilling our commitment to the Education 2030 Agenda and leaving no one behind is not an easy endeavour and we need everyone on board in this unprecedented, yet necessary feat. This publication is meant to facilitate taking stock of the current situation and accelerate focused advances on the most relevant education topics for the Asia-Pacific region. Education Finance Watch 2024 Année de publication: 2024 Auteur institutionnel: Global Education Monitoring Report Team | UNESCO Institute for Statistics (UIS) | World Bank The Education Finance Watch (EFW) is a collaborative effort between the World Bank, the GEM Report, and the UNESCO Institute for Statistics (UIS). SDG 4 Data Digest 2020: Using Household Survey Data to Monitor SDG 4 Année de publication: 2020 Auteur institutionnel: UNESCO Institute for Statistics (UIS) The 2020 edition of the SDG 4 Data Digest by the UNESCO Institute for Statistics focuses on household surveys as an important and underutilized tool to collect the data needed to track progress towards Sustainable Development Goal 4 and to ensure that no one is left behind. The Digest describes existing survey programmes and offers advice on the design and implementation of new surveys. The Digest identifies a number of advantages to using household surveys and describes the categories of indicators best suited for monitoring with survey data. Data from household surveys complement administrative data collected in schools and can be disaggregated to a greater extent than administrative data to facilitate the monitoring of exclusion in education. The definitions and calculation methods of selected indicators are laid out and the combination of household survey data with data from other sources is explained. This issue of the Digest is aimed at government officials, national planners, donors and others who make decisions about the implementation of nationally representative household surveys. It describes the requirements for conducting a household survey and the steps that must be followed from questionnaire design to data collection and analysis, and it gives advice on presentation of the findings. A section on COVID-19 summarizes the impact of the current pandemic on data collection. Additional resources, with suggested survey questions for the collection of education data through household surveys, are also included. From Learning Recovery to Education Transformation: Insights and Reflections from the 4th Survey on National Education Responses to COVID-19 School Closures Année de publication: 2022 Auteur institutionnel: UNESCO | UNESCO Institute for Statistics (UIS) | United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) | World Bank | Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) From Learning Recovery to Education Transformation, a new joint report by UNESCO, UNESCO Institute for Statistics (UIS), UNICEF, The World Bank and The OECD, presents findings from the fourth round of the Survey on National Education Responses to COVID-19 School Closures, administered between April–July 2022 with responses from Ministries of Education in 93 countries. It explores how countries are progressing in the RAPID actions to recover learning: Reach every child and keep them in school; Assess learning levels regularly; Prioritize teaching the fundamentals; Increase the efficiency of instruction; and Develop psychosocial health and wellbeing.   SDG 4 Data Digest 2018: Data to Nurture Learning Année de publication: 2018 Auteur institutionnel: UNESCO Institute for Statistics (UIS) The world is facing a crisis of learning, with many children leaving school without the basic skills they need for a prosperous and productive adult life. Two-thirds of the estimated 617 million children and adolescents who cannot read a simple sentence or manage a basic mathematics calculation are in the classroom. Too many are waiting for a quality education that never comes. As the 2018 SDG 4 Data Digest shows, it is not enough to hope that they will stay in school and somehow acquire skills in reading and mathematics. It is critical to monitor those skills as children progress through school. That requires comparable data, over time, to ensure that children – and the education systems that serve them – are on track.Given the critical importance of learning for the achievement of all the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), from poverty reduction to peaceful societies, this year’s edition of the SDG 4 Data Digest is dedicated to the theme of learning outcomes. It showcases the most comprehensive and up-to-date compilation of work to inform the learning indicators of SDG 4.The Digest discusses learning evidence on early child development, mathematics and reading skills among school-aged children, and digital and work-related skills among youth and adults. It highlights the conceptual frameworks and tools developed by leading authors and institutions to understand, measure, monitor and support learning for all. It also considers the implications of reporting for SDG 4. SDG 4 Data Book: Global Education Indicators 2018 Année de publication: 2018 Auteur institutionnel: UNESCO Institute for Statistics (UIS) This publication presents the global monitoring indicators used by countries and the international development community to monitor progress towards Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG 4) on education.
