The report examines the following education system features: participation in early childhood education and care, school funding, differentiation and school types, school choice, admissions policies, tracking systems, grade repetition, school autonomy, school accountability, support for disadvantaged schools, support for low-achieving students and the opportunity to learn.  Education, Identity and Rising Extremism: From Preventing Violent Extremism to Promoting Peace, Resilience, Equal Rights and Pluralism (PREP) Année de publication: 2017 Auteur: Sanam Anderlini Auteur institutionnel: International Civil Society Action Network In November 2016, during ICAN’s fifth annual Women, Peace and Security forum, members of the Women’s Alliance for Security Leadership (WASL) and other women-led organizations in over 30 countries analyzed the role of formal and informal education in contributing to enabling conditions and mitigating extremist violence. They also highlighted their own practical experiences and lessons learnt in providing education to prevent violent extremism by fostering peace, resilience, equal rights and pluralism (PREP) in formal and informal spaces, including through the teachings of alternative religious narratives. Their experiences, combined with desk research on the state of current policy and practice, and the first multi-stakeholder Global Solutions Exchange (GSX) meeting on the nexus of education, gender and extremism held at the UNESCO headquarters in Paris in March 2017, inform the findings of this report.  Pack européen pour la visite du Mémorial et du Musée d'Auschwitz-Birkenau - Pistes pédagogiques pour enseignants et éducateurs (2012) Année de publication: 2011 Auteur institutionnel: Council of Europe | Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial and Museum | Poland. Ministry of Education Taking groups of students to the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial and Museum is a heavy responsibility, but it is a major contribution to citizenship if it fosters understanding of what Auschwitz stands for, particularly when the last survivors are at the end of their lives. This pack is designed for teachers wishing to organize student visits to authentic places of remembrance, and for the guides, academics and others who work every day with young people at Auschwitz. To avoid the risk of inappropriate reactions or the failure to benefit from a large investment in travel and accommodation, considerable preparation and discussion is necessary before the visit and serious reflection afterwards. This pack offers insights into the complexities of human behaviour so that students can have a better understanding of what it means to be a citizen. The young people who visit Auschwitz in the next few years will be witnesses of the last witnesses. Their generation will be the last to hear the survivors speaking on the spot. The Council of Europe, the Polish Ministry of Education and the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial and Museum are jointly sponsoring this project aimed at preventing crimes against humanity through Holocaust remembrance teaching. To address these topics, this study analyzes curricular documents collected from 18 elementary and secondary schools selected as exemplary cases in 2014. It also conducted in-depth interviews with 14 teachers who are in charge of planing and implementing multicultural programs in core schools. Major results support that multicultural core schools expand the targets of multicultural education to mainstream students, their parents and local residents beyond minority students and their parents. It turned out, however, that multicultural core schools still tend to untouch structural biases and discriminations, while focusing on extending students’ awareness of cultural and racial diversities. This study also reveals that participating teachers face such difficulties as heavy workloads, lack of collaboration from local schools, and lack of relevant experiences and instructional materials. Based on these results, this study suggests the sharing of successful programs, enhancing teachers awareness of the significance of multicultural education, and further supports for teachers in charge of multicultural education to achieve the targeted goals of multicultural core schools. Auteur institutionnel: Korea Institute for Curriculum and Evaluation (KICE) Multicultural Education through ELT Textbooks: Developing a Checklist for English Materials Evaluation Based on Multiculturalism (The Journal of Curriculum and Evaluation; Vol. 20, No. 4) Année de publication: 2017 Auteur: Minah Kim | Doseon Eur Auteur institutionnel: Korea Institute for Curriculum and Evaluation (KICE) Multicultural education is recommended as an effort to resolve significant social challenges in Korea. This is reflected in the 2015 reform of national curriculum and instruction as it promotes cultural diversity and competence. As English textbooks are widely used in EFL classrooms in Korea by both students and teachers, it is useful to examine how much English textbooks are multiculturalism-friendly and -responsive. This study has 3 parts: 1) It makes a critical review of previous research on English textbooks evaluation checklists, 2) it then synthesizes them and proposes a new tentative multiculturalism-based criteria for English textbooks evaluation, and finally, 3) it applies the new subset of the criteria to an English textbook used in EFL classrooms in Korea to test its validity and practicality. Developing a multiculturalism-responsive criteria for English textbooks evaluation will provide multiculturalism-friendly classroom environments in which EFL learners can grow not only linguistically but also 'multiculturally'. Toolkit on the Holocaust and Human Rights Education in the EU Auteur institutionnel: European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights | Yad Vashem Responding to a practical need expressed by teachers and students with a view toward examining the connections between Holocaust and Human Rights Education, the Fundamental Rights Agency (FRA) and Yad Vashem have developed this Toolkit to provide first insights into Holocaust and Human Rights Education content and methodologies, which can be used for teaching about and from the Holocaust and human rights.
