[Summary] Rethinking Learning: A Review of Social and Emotional Learning for Education Systems; Summary for Decision Makers Année de publication: 2020 Auteur institutionnel: Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Education for Peace and Sustainable Development (MGIEP) The publication, titled “Rethinking Learning: A Review of Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) for Education Systems” was worked upon from 2018 to 2020. The purpose of this publication was to review the latest research on SEL and to present scientific evidence for why SEL is key to education, and by that corollary, to achieving the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically SDG 4, Target 7 that focuses on building peaceful and sustainable societies through education.This summary, aimed at decision makers, synthesises and integrates the main findings, challenges and recommendations from the eight chapters of the full Review. The key questions that guided the Review were: (i) What constitutes an SEL intervention; (ii) Why and when SEL interventions are necessary; (iii) The science and evidence supporting SEL interventions; (iv) How can SEL be implemented; and (iv) The cost and benefits of SEL interventions.

The best way to address school violence is to step in promptly, with effective intervention in the first instance. Internationally, ‘best practice’ in preventing and responding to school violence is being used to develop school-wide systems of prevention and intervention.This publication was prepared under the co-operation between the Ministry of Education and Science of Kazakhstan, the Office of the Commissioner for Human Rights of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the Akimat of East Kazakhstan Oblast, the East Kazakhstan State University, and the UNICEF Office in Kazakhstan. It aims to facilitate the prevention of violence towards children in schools in Kazakhstan, with support from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Norway.

By analysing and comparing Mattias Grünewald’s Isenheim Altarpiece, and the Keiskamma Altarpiece, students will gain an understanding of how art can uplift and empower communities in need. The lesson is based on the story, ‘Tapestries for Hope: Promoting Healthy and Vibrant Communities in the Eastern Cape of South Africa’, written by Annette Wentworth for Keiskamma Canada Foundation, a charitable organization based in Edmonton, as part of the Together: Alberta’s Notebook on the Global Goals.
