Setting Commitments: National SDG 4 Benchmarks to Transform Education Année de publication: 2022 Auteur institutionnel: Global Education Monitoring Report Team | UNESCO Institute for Statistics (UIS) This publication provides an overview of the transformative agenda being established by countries, as they set SDG 4 benchmarks for education progress to take ownership of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Inspired by the UN Secretary-General’s 2014 call for countries to embrace ‘a culture of shared responsibility’ based on ‘benchmarking for progress’, paragraph 28 of the Education 2030 Framework for Action also called on countries to establish ‘appropriate intermediate benchmarks for addressing the accountability deficit associated with longer-term targets’. This report outlines the steps taken by countries to set these commitments for 2025 and 2030 against seven indicators and is timed to feed into the second review of SDG 4 at the High-level Political Forum. The SDG 4 benchmark values now defined for almost nine in ten countries lay out their nationally determined contributions to the common education goal, using a concept embraced by the climate change sector. Twelve countries’ experiences of approaching the challenge of setting benchmarks based on their education sector plans are included, serving as inspiration for other countries to reflect on their own contributions and the task of developing appropriate policy responses in line with their own ambitions for the next decade, especially in the context of recovery from COVID-19.This publication proposes a way forward for monitoring progress towards the national SDG 4 benchmarks. This way of monitoring will be context-specific, recognizing countries’ starting points, helping link their national with regional and global education agendas. The benchmarks could be a basis for a compact in which countries commit to increasing their ambition, and, in return, the international community offers a program of support. In other words, a system of political accountability associated to political commitments with a support mechanism to accomplish the task.
Libraries and Sustainable Development: A Growing Relationship (Documentation et bibliothèques; vol. 63, no. 3) Année de publication: 2017 Auteur: Pascale Guertin | Valérie Poirier-Rouillard Auteur institutionnel: Association pour l'avancement des sciences et des techniques de la documentation (ASTED) Green roofs, geothermal systems, sustainable materials, recycling and reuse are words that spontaneously come to mind when it comes to sustainable development. But what does this concept really mean? How does it manifest itself, concretely, in our environment, in our life habits? The library ecosystem is increasingly giving way to the precepts of sustainable development, by its civic nature and its mission to share knowledge, but also by its inspirational nature and with new ideas. In Québec and internationally, various green library projects that are focused on the needs and development of the communities they serve are plentiful and distinctive, giving rise to a new discourse that harmoniously interweaves existing considerations and imperatives without compromising the needs of future generations. The following article summarises the principal components of a project undertaken during a summer course taught by Réjean Savard, namely SCI6372 – Aspects internationaux et comparés de l’information. It is the result of a field trip organised by the École de bibliothéconomie et des sciences de l’information (EBSI) in Germany, Prague and Strasbourg during the summer of 2016. It provides an overview of the initiatives of some libraries around the world, and invites us to reflect on the role of the green library.
Youth and Changing Realities: Rethinking Post-basic Education in Sub-Saharan Africa Année de publication: 2022 Auteur institutionnel: UNESCO Education should empower young people for full participation in their societies and education systems should be responsive to their voices, aspirations and actions. At this time of upheaval, it is more important than ever that youth voices are heard. This synthesis report analyses the perspectives of post-basic education of some young people from 20 countries in sub-Saharan Africa. Their voices express diverse experiences, aspirations and expectations. They describe ‘changing realities’ in which education and training opportunities often seem unable to meet their aspirations and new demands of the world of work and society. It focusses on four crucial themes for post-basic education, with reference to youth’s experiences: financing, socio-cultural barriers, skills for work and life, and educators’ capacities. The Education 2030 Framework for Action calls for youth, learners and their organizations to be full partners in the realization of SDG4; to encourage governments and other stakeholders to develop education programmes in consultation with young people; and to help shape policies for relevant and responsive education systems. This synthesis report makes an important contribution towards rethinking post-basic education in sub-Saharan Africa.
