Closing the Gap: Ensuring There Are Enough Qualified and Supported Teachers in Sub-Saharan Africa International Task Force on Teachers for Education 2030 | UNESCO The fourth Sustainable Development Goal (SDG 4) aims to ensure better learning opportunities and outcomes and more equitable and inclusive education for all. SDG target 4.c calls for an increase in the supply of qualified teachers, particularly in low-income countries. To achieve this ambitious target, the international community needs to pay renewed attention to teacher support and preparation. This advocacy brief considers what it will take to increase the supply of qualified teachers in sub-Saharan Africa, the region where the teacher shortage is most acute. It analyses the causes for teacher shortages, looks at trends affecting the region and describes the scale of the shortages. It examines the fiscal pressures on low-income countries to cover salary costs and the costs of initial teacher education and continuing professional development, and it proposes some recommendations for governments and the international community to achieve the essential target of substantially increasing the supply of well qualified teachers.  UNESCO Science Report: The Race Against Time for Smarter Development 발행 연도: 2021 저자: Susan Schneegans | Tiffany Straza | Jake Lewis 단체 저자: UNESCO This seventh edition of the report monitors the development path that countries have been following over the past five years from the perspective of science governance. It documents the rapid societal transformation under way, which offers new opportunities for social and economic experimentation but also risks exacerbating social inequalities, unless safeguards are put in place. The report concludes that countries will need to invest more in research and innovation, if they are to succeed in their dual digital and green transition. More than 30 countries have already raised their research spending since 2014, in line with their commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals. Despite this progress, eight out of ten countries still devote less than 1% of GDP to research, perpetuating their dependence on foreign technologies.  Strengthening Independent Media, One Case at a Time: A Handbook for Media Vability; Preview of a Forthcoming IPDC Knowledge Resource UNESCO “Strengthening Independent Media, One Case at a Time: A Handbook for Media Viability” will include case studies of innovative ideas from a wide variety of news media companies, mostly in the developing world, that are succeeding in difficult times and have lessons to share with others who are struggling. In 2020, UNESCO and the Council of Europe decided to collaborate on a research project with a view to examining the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on student voice and particularly the consequences of the subsequent school closures on student voice opportunities in Europe and in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA). This publication details the findings of this study and provides recommendations for school directors and personnel, teachers, educators, policy-makers and young people to build on the lessons learned from the pandemic and help the education community work collectively towards promoting societies that are guided by human rights, with student voice and participation at the centre. It is primarily intended for policy-makers, educators, teachers working in formal school systems. It may also be of interest to professionals working in non-formal education settings or other sectors – namely the justice, social and health sectors – working with student.  The Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Education: International Evidence From the Responses to Educational Disruption Survey (REDS) (UNESCO) | International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement (IEA) The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted education provision at an unprecedented scale, with education systems around the world being impacted by extended school closures and abrupt changes to normal school operations. The Responses to Educational Disruption Survey (REDS) investigated how teaching and learning were affected by the health crisis, and how education stakeholders responded to the educational disruption across and within countries. The study aimed to provide a systemic, multi-perspective, and comparative picture of the situation at the secondary education level (grade eight) in 11 countries spanning Africa, Asia, Arab region, Europe, and Latin America. While many other efforts exist that collect and provide similar information, they are mostly derived from non-representative rapid surveys and lack internationally comparable information from schools, collected in a systematic and scientific manner. The REDS International Report presents unique data, collected from countries, schools, teachers, and students for the first time, in chapters that cover several themes on which data were collected which include student and teacher well-being, students’ academic progress during the school closures, and the measures countries have implemented to keep all children learning. Initial findings provide evidence for better orienting and tailoring policy responses to crisis and provide invaluable information on what may be required to accelerate education, recover from crisis, and to strengthen the resilience of education systems in the future.  COVID-19 Learning Losses: Rebuilding Quality Learning for All in the Middle East and North Africa 발행 연도: 2021 저자: Hana Yoshimoto | Jeannette Vogelaar | Brenda Haiplik 단체 저자: UNESCO | United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) | World Bank An entire generation of children in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) is estimated to be affected by the education crisis determined by the COVID-19 pandemic, with potential impacts that are going beyond the immediate/short term and also well beyond the education domain itself, with consequences on children’s socialisation, mental well-being, and future perspective of being active members of their society, including in the labor market. More information on the impact of the crisis would help countries to put in place strategies to mitigate the impacts. Timely investment and action to prevent extreme impacts of this crisis on education are of paramount importance in MENA, which already tackling a learning crisis before the COVID-19 outbreak. This publication delineates the overall education status in MENA after the breakout of COVID-19 pandemic, by presenting the education responses in MENA, and assessing the potential learning loss through a simulation analysis, recommendations are provided on how to build back better and enhance access and quality learning for all.  The General History of Africa: A UNESCO Flagship Programme for Operational Strategy Priority Africa UNESCO As part of UNESCO’s Operational Strategy for Priority Africa (2022 – 2029), the General History of Africa (GHA) Flagship Programme responds to the challenge of reconstructing Africa and its diaspora historical memory and conscience by revisiting Eurocentric and colonial biases in the representation of their history and societies. It aims to advance a common identity and pride in Africa’s heritage, progress towards greater justice and an inclusive and fair future through the reappropriation and production of knowledge on Africa and its diaspora history in a manner that could contribute to the transformation of education in Africa and beyond. The GHA is aligned with the African Union Agenda 2063, The Africa We Want, the Charter for African Cultural Renaissance, and the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The Effects of AI on the Working Lives of Women 발행 연도: 2022 저자: Clementine Collett | Gina Neff | Livia Gouvea Gomes 단체 저자: UNESCO | Inter-American Development Bank | Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) The use of AI technologies will affect women’s opportunities for work, and their position, status and treatment in the workplace. Around the globe, women in the labour force earn less than men, spend more time undertaking unpaid child- and elder-care jobs, hold fewer senior positions, participate less in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields, and tend to hold more precarious jobs overall. In harnessing AI, governments, institutions and companies must narrow gender gaps rather than perpetuate or exacerbate them. This report, by the IDB, OECD and UNESCO, outlines current knowledge of the impact that AI systems have on women’s opportunities for work, and their position, treatment and status in the workforce. It does so by exploring how AI is used within and outside the workplace, and how it could be used in the future. It looks at the potential impact of new and emerging AI technologies on the skills that employers will require, on how women look for and are hired for jobs, and on how jobs are structured through automated monitoring and oversight. The report maps the opportunities and challenges that AI presents for the working lives of women and highlights the complexities that varying national and regional contexts present for understanding the impact of AI on the work of women. The report also notes that current research does not offer a complete or definite picture of how AI impacts the working lives of women and calls for further research and analysis in this area.
