It can be used as a resource for journalists to understand the science of climate change, as well as helping journalists to improve their reporting of the environmental, social, economic ̧ political, technological and other angles of the story. The Right to Education: What’s at Stake in Afghanistan?; A 20-Year Review Год публикации: 2021 Организация-автор: UNESCO This report takes stock of the achievements in education made by Afghanistan over the past 20 years and sets out immediate action to safeguard the right to education for all learners following deep political change in the country in 2021.Although Afghanistan lags far behind countries across South and West Asia on most development indicators, it has made impressive progress in education over two decades. Enrolment has increased ten-fold, with substantial gains for girls and female literacy. Female teachers have been hired. Steady efforts have been made to expand the school network across the country.The country has ratified key international normative instruments relating to the right to education; enshrined this right in the Constitution and adopted a wide range of policy measures to increase access, improve education quality and reduce gender, socio- economic and rural/urban disparities.But the challenges remain colossal, with half the primary school-aged children not enrolled in school and very low learning outcomes. The country is highly dependent on external aid to sustain its education system. It needs to uphold state obligations on the right to education without any discrimination and continue removing barriers that impede progress towards the Sustainable Development Goal on education to build the country’s future.

From Rights to Country-Level Action: Results of the Tenth Consultation of Member States on the 1960 Convention and Recommendation Год публикации: 2022 Автор: Rolla Moumné | Sharlene Bianchi Организация-автор: UNESCO The year 2020 marked a turning point for education worldwide. The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic not only amplified the difficulties and revealed existing weaknesses, but also brought the unpreparedness and lack of resilience of national education systems to the fore.The tenth consultation on the 1960 Convention against Discrimination in Education was conducted in precisely this context.Providing a valuable opportunity for States to take stock of the progress made in implementing Convention and sharing interesting national practices, the Consultation revealed continuous and new challenges the education sector faces. The unique timing of the consultation also created an opportunity to report on actions taken to faceadverse effects of the pandemic. This report analyzes and presents the Consultation findings, draws trends, and provides guidance for action. It shows how, by implementing the provisions of the Consultation, States can accelerate progress towards achieving Sustainable Development Goal 4, while invites a reflection on possibly reviewing the framework of the right to education to further respond to new challenges and put an end to increased inequalities worldwide.

A whole world is contained in this “almost”. To translate is to confront the other, the different, the unknown. It is often the essential prerequisite for those who want to access a universal, multiple, diverse culture. It is therefore no coincidence that the League of Nations took up the issue in the 1930s, envisaging the creation of an Index Translationum.Taken over by UNESCO in 1948, this Index allowed the first census of translated works in the world. Two years later, the Representative Works programme was launched to translate masterpieces of world literature. UNESCO’s support for the publication last year of a lexicon of words from indigenous languages of Mexico that are untranslatable into Spanish is a continuation of these efforts.Although their disappearance was predicted as early as the 1950s, translators – who are most often women – have never been as numerous as they are today. The machines developed in the aftermath of the war have not been able to outdo this behind-the-scenes profession. Nor have digital translation tools, which have become the standard feature of our globalized conversations, even if they have contributed to transforming the job.This is because language is more than just a means of communication. It is that, and much more. It is what written or oral works make of it, contributing to forge what is sometimes called the ‘genius of the language’, which the most powerful applications cannot restore.

The Faure report, Learning to be, in 1972, and the Delors report, Learning: The Treasure Within, in 1996, have become benchmarks in the debate on learning. This third document presents a lucid assessment of the challenges confronting education today.Faced with the rapid changes in our environment, a change of direction is needed. We need to devote more importance to ecology; to provide students with the critical tools to detect misinformation, prejudices, and preconceived ideas; to strengthen teamwork, and to improve the professionalization of teachers. Beyond these imperatives, we must also rethink the multiple interdependencies, the links between generations and between cultures, and our relationship with living beings, to establish a new social contract for education.
