Review of the Evidence on Sexuality Education: Report to Inform the Update of the UNESCO International Technical Guidance on Sexuality Education Année de publication: 2018 Auteur: Paul Montgomery | Wendy Knerr Auteur institutionnel: UNESCO UNESCO published the International Technical Guidance on Sexuality Education (ITGSE): An evidence-informed approach for schools, teachers and health educators, in 2009. It put forward the rationale for sexuality education, technical advice on characteristics of effective programmes, and topics and learning objectives to be covered in a ‘basic minimum package’ of sexuality education for children and young people aged 5–18+. Since the publication, UNESCO, several UNAIDS cosponsors and other international partners have advocated for ‘comprehensive sexuality education’ (CSE) for all adolescents and youth, and as an essential component of quality education. With the passage of time and the expanded understanding of the role of CSE, UNESCO sought to review the ITGSE with the aim of updating its content to reflect the evidence and lessons learned from implementing sexuality education programmes since 2009. UNESCO sought the technical services of a consultant team to conduct an evidence review to inform the update. This review would involve research on new evidence and good practice in sexuality education including evidence on the effectiveness of CSE and lessons documented through the implementation of sexuality education programmes to highlight benchmarks of quality CSE content and modalities of delivery. The research was also intended to make recommendations as to the: adequacy of existing content; presence of any gaps in this content; and evidence-based recommendations on how such content gaps can be addressed in the updated ITGSE. Biennial Report 2016/2017: UNESCO Regional Bureau for Education in the Arab States Année de publication: 2018 Auteur institutionnel: UNESCO Beirut As Regional Bureau for Education, UNESCO Beirut is the lead coordinator for SDG 4 in the Arab Region. We strive to provide tangible support for each Member State in the region, taking into account national needs and priorities, thereby employing nationally relevant approaches. More specifically, our work aims to address both the humanitarian and development aspects brought about by the protracted crisis in Syria through bridging the learning gaps for the youth, both for Syrian refugees and vulnerable youth in host communities. Our response also targets teachers, mentors and facilitators as well as Ministries’ technical officials. The crisis in Syria has created a need for specific support in education in emergencies and quality education to which we actively engage from both, upstream analytical and capacity building and downstream operational levels. UNESCO Beirut has also strengthened its leadership to respond to the deliberate destruction of cultural heritage, illicit trafficking, and attacks against individuals on religious or cultural grounds. We raise the alarm to protect heritage in danger, assessing damages to World Heritage sites in conflict. We also raise awareness among the public about the values of cultural heritage and the need to protect it for future generations. In today’s diverse societies, the Organization’s fundamental humanist mission guides us to support people, especially the youth, in understanding each other and working together to build lasting peace and enables people to create and use knowledge for just and inclusive societies. We continue to advocate free, independent and pluralistic media in print, broadcast and online to enhance freedom of expression as a contributor to peace, sustainability, poverty eradication and human rights. This biennial report summarizes the work and achievements accomplished between 2016 and 2017 by our office. The International status of education about the Holocaust : A global mapping of textbooks and curricula Année de publication: 2015 Auteur institutionnel: UNESCO This publication by UNESCO and the Georg Eckert Institute documents ways in which the Holocaust is presented in secondary school level history and social studies curricula worldwide, and conceptualized and narrated in textbooks from twenty-six countries, with all continents represented. Historical understandings of the Holocaust are defined in terms of the spatial and temporal scales with which the event is portrayed, the protagonists involved, interpretative patterns (according to definitions, comprehensiveness, causes, relativization or banalization), narrative techniques and viewpoints, didactic methods, and national idiosyncrasies. The study is based on 272 currently valid curricula from 135 countries, and on 89 textbooks published in 26 countries since 2000. The aim of the study is primarily to document information in such a way that it reflects local understandings of the Holocaust, principally by recording concepts and narratives of the Holocaust found in educational media currently in use in schools. The findings show both convergence and divergence in the representations analysed. The Holocaust is subject to shared patterns of representation, which include selectivity, personalization, appropriation, screening and omission. It is also subject to narrative idiosyncrasies. One of the main trends worldwide is domestication, a process whereby countries place emphasis on the local significance of the event or appropriate them in the interests of local populations. Drawing on such national and international patterns of representation, the publication concludes by formulating recommendations for future curricula and textbook narratives about the Holocaust. These recommendations relate to such issues as the use of terms, the comprehensiveness of historical facts, the definition of causes, the combination of universal and local approaches, and the development of historical literacy.
